If you're setting up, use ~10 Mb for boot, 128 Mb for swap and roughly 8 Gig
for / AFAIR.

Now okay, I've got a lot of hard disk, and I'm no fan of Windows, but isn't
that a lot?

Not when you consider what is included. A typical Windoze install can typically take up around 400 to 500 mb. Add all of the updates and security patches and throw in Office for good measure. You could easily be using 600 to 700 mbs of disk space and still not have all the software that is included in an almost everything install of SuSE. If you are worried about disk space, then only install the packages you need Victor On Wed, 29 Mar 2000, Col Wilson wrote:

Bare in mind that 8 gig is for the FULL 6cd installation with god knows how many applications :) Cya Matthew Matthew King: Network Engineer, Cable & Wireless Optus. My ICQ#: 2342475 Message me! Yes, it IS quite a lot. But you asked for an "almost everything" install. In 6.3, that would include (assuming I haven't missed anything): * 4 text versions of emacs * 2 X versions of emacs * 3 versions of vi * pico * four or five other text editors * a simple word processor * at least two HTML editors * at least two application suites that include word processors * two text-only web browsers * two slim X web browsers * three fairly-substantial X web browsers * at least three web servers * about a dozen assorted FTP clients * three FTP servers * two complete Java runtime environments * a Java development environment that can also be used as a runtime environment * at least four sound mixers * at least three ways to play MID files, five for WAV, four for MP3 * at least four complete CD-writing application suites * at least three ways to rip WAV files off an audio CD ... get the idea? 6.3 comes on *six* CDs. I suspect 6.4 will be at least as large. (Suggestion to the installer maintainers: can we get a list of apps grouped by function at a finer resolution, with their X/text status as a side note? E.G. Text Editors: * (T) this version of EMACS * (T) that version of EMACS * (T) the other version of EMACS * (X) yet another version of EMACS * (X) and yet another * (X/T) vim * (T) nvi And, if you can, rewrite the descriptions of the packages in a set - TOGETHER - so that they actually tell about what is in the package and how it compares to other similar packages; not what got left out as compared to some previous version of the same package.) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
