Is there any way that I can make linux look at irq 12 for my ttyS3? At present I only have ttyS0 and ttyS3 enabled at irq 4 and 3 respectively. S0 is my mouse and S3 is my internal modem, I would like to enable S1 and make that irq 3 (which is generally default for that anyway) and to make S3 be irq 12 as it is the only one I have available. The modem even has that as an option for the jumpers. The problem is, I went and enabled S1 in the bios and changed the jumper on my modem to set it to irq 12. Now when I boot up it says that both S1 and S3 are at irq 3. One thing I did notice in the bios is that there is a section where you can set your irq's, ie, PCI, PnP, and what not, but 12 is not in that list. In windows and linux it is shown as being available. ( I don't really even know why I still have windows on this machine any more ) Is there any way that I can make it mork? Try using the setserial command. the manpage for it should give you all the help you need including making it happen automatically at boot up. This should work in any case (my modem is on ttyS3 irq 10 and I have no problems): setserial /dev/ttyS3 irq 12 Good luck, David Bellows -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

You need to run setserial to let the kernal know where the serial port is. (ie setserial /dev/ttyS3 ioport 0x3f8 irq 12 uart 16550a) Once that works you can modify the file /sbin/init.d/serial in the manual configuration to reflect the same settings. Don't forget to uncomment the line. :-) Stephen Damian Slavek wrote:

Well, I tried that and wvdial can't seem to find my modem there. I've always had it at ttyS3. I went and edited the /sbin/init.d/serial file and had the line read: run_setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A port 0x2E8 irq 12 this is in the manual config section BTW. I tried this with the AUTO_IRQ=auto_irq option both uncommented and commented out but neither seem to work. I did a reboot after each edit. Another thing I noticed on boot up is that I have these lines: ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A ttyS03 at 0x02e8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A ttyS0 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A ttyS3 at 0x02e8 (irq = 12) is a 16550A But when I use dmesg, only the first two lines of this show up. When I type the command: setserial /dev/ttyS3 I get the output (not exactly the same format but the same info) of the last line that states it is at irq 12. Using KDE I check Settings > Information > Interrupts and neither irq 3 nor 12 shows up as being used by serial. In /var/log/warn I get a message saying: Mar 30 01:18:15 damianks modprobe: modprode: Can't locate module char-major-15 as far as I know this has nothing to do with my problem but I would still like to know what it is for. Any ideas on why wvdial-1.40-24 can't find my modem there? Stephen wrote:
