Actually, the window manager (and other things) is launched by the gnome
session manager with a call to gnome-session and by default it launches
IceWM at the first start. You can change this later with the gnome control
center.

Well, Enlightenment is not specifically intended to be GNOME's default
window manager but can indeed deals with GNOME's features.
I answered by experience. The first time I ran GNOME, the only GNOME
compliant window managers that I had were IceWM and Enlightenment and
IceWM was used as a window manager. For the Helix GNOME distribution,
I believe that it should be Sawfish.

My installation went into /opt/gnome. Try: 1) exec gnome-session as the last line of your ~/.xinitrc file 2) deleting the directory ~/.gnome (if it exists). (Don't worry -- it will be recreated) Funny -- my installation went without a hitch!! or maybe a slight one -- I had gnome running with windowmaker at first, something I could not change until I deleted the ~/.gnome directory. Avi,
1. I am running KDE on my Linux box for few years now and I wanted to see how does Gnome look like.
I did the same thing. I had actually read about GNOME in Byte Magazine before I had a copy of Linux, so it was the first thing I wanted to run. However, while trying to get GNOME to run, I ran into KDE a become a nearly instant fan.
2. KDE is too Windowish for my taste. Now that I am trying Gnome, it seems to me like a much more modern environment then KDE.
KDE, not modern? Well, actually I'd say the same about Windows, it's interface seems modern to me - just not what's under the hood. KDE actually has some powerful stuff under the hood though - KDE's own OpenParts technology and CORBA provide powerful object brokering in KDE2 with many applications and plug-ins for the Konqueror (File manager, image viewer, Java/JavaScript-supportive web browser). And, hey, if you don't like the way it looks, check out kde.themes.org, where you can change it to your taste (especially in 2.0 where the widgets can be customized, IIRC)!
3. The beauty of Linux is that you can run multiple graphical environments, so why not give it a try?
True. Especially great with the K Display Manager (replacement for XDM), which lets you choose your WM easily at each startup (remembering your last pick).
4. I like the thrill of trying something new... ;-)

According to the GNOME web site: GNOME is chock-full of cutting edge technologies. Network transparent component technology using CORBA, extensive use of XML, and one of the most advanced imaging models on any platform. Bottom line, as long as we have two competing desktops, we are all going to have mucho fun. BTW, I didn't not try KDE 2.0 since it is still in beta. When 2.0 will be go gold I will install it as well. Avi "Timothy R. Butler" wrote:

Sorry Tim, but I beg to differ :-) Personally I don't like KDE because it is so resource hungry. Also, it seems to bear a striking resemblence to something I'm trying to forget :-). A lot of the individual apps are really good, but I prefer E (nowadays, anyway.) I used to swear by WindowMaker until I tried the latest version of E. I haven't hadf the chance to look at Sawfish yet (other than some screen-shots) but it sounds like it might be worth the effort. -- Regards Don Hansford ECKYTECH COMPUTING Surfing the Net (without crashing) With SuSE 6.4 Linux (Thanx Linus!) Apparently someone else had registered the name Sawmill, so they had a comp to see who could come up with the best name. Sawfish won :-) -- Regards Don Hansford ECKYTECH COMPUTING Surfing the Net (without crashing) With SuSE 6.4 Linux (Thanx Linus!) That's right. But if you don't define a window manager then Gnome runs with Sawfish (the default Gnome windowmanager). Try it -- it looks great!
Well, so does Enlightenment. However, I use ICEwm because it's fast, doesn't eat up a lot of RAm and it's easy to configure. I find Sawish to be small, very fast and very configurable -- you can make it look like almost anything you like! IMNSHO, from slowest to fastest: Enlightement: Big, slow, but ultra-configurable. My nephew's wm of choice. Sawfish: Also ultra-configurable, but not as comprehensive as E. IceWM: Reasonably light, fully GNOME-Compliant. XFCE: Lightest of the pack, but still slower than Ice (?). WindowMaker: THE Fastest GNOME window manager; probably the best balance of speed and functionality anyway. My favorite GNOME wm. And for flavor: Blackbox: NOT GNOME-Compliant, but who cares? It's FAST! I just use the apps anyway ;). -- -=|JP|=- "Why, oh, why didn't I take the blue pill?" If XFCE is slower than IceWM then you've got those windowmanagers in the wrong order, Jon! I tried WindowMaker a while ago and I really like the way it looks. IceWM doesn't hold a candle to it as far as looks go. However, I use IceWM because as far as using the keyboard goes there's not much guesswork involved. It's all very logical to me and that's nice because if it's possible I don't even want to touch the mouse. The layout is also very logical - everything is right there where it's supposed to be. On top of that it's also very stable (never froze up with me) and it's very fast. Yet, despite all that it's getting kind of boring!
And for flavor:
Blackbox: NOT GNOME-Compliant, but who cares? It's FAST! I just use the apps anyway ;).

Here's a question for you; did you install 0.41 from the CD's, 0.51 (Stable at http://blackbox.alug.org/), or 0.60.3 (latest Beta)? The 0.6x series is lightyears ahead of 0.41 in terms of appearance, and I've been using 0.6x since it was initially announced nearly half a year ago. I'll put some screenshots up at http://members.linuxstart.com/~UberPenguin/ as soon as I get some time to take down the old site (it sucks ;). -- -=|JP|=- "Why, oh, why didn't I take the blue pill?" I downloaded, compiled and installed 0.51. Everything went very smooth and I had it up and running in a matter of minutes. Looks are one thing - I have to like the way it functions too. And like I said, I like to use the keyboard and not the mouse. Can I accomplish things with keycombinations instead of the mouse? -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." You need to run gnome-session which will kick off the window manager (by default Sawfish (comes with helix-gnome), but you can choose from within gnome) for you. I've kept the kde login manager and so I added the script: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 30 Jun 1 09:06 /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome* Which is: #!/bin/sh exec gnome-session I then just have a 'gnome' entry in the kdm configuration (configured from within KDE). I've not tried the gdm login manager. Jamie On Sat, 3 Jun 2000, Avi Schwartz wrote:
Hi,
I downloaded and installed Helix Gnome on my SuSE 6.3 machine, but I have no clue how to start it. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Avi
