I have not worked with or setup a network before and I am having trouble determining what programs should be installed. I am trying to set up a network as follows: 1 computer with Linux installed, 1 computer with Windos95 installed and a network printer. Each computer only has the one OS installed. What I need to know is:
1. From the Suse6.3 distro, what programs need to be installed. I don't really want to install more than I have to.
This totally depends on what you want to do with the network and with the linux box.
2. Since the OS's are on different computers, is Samba necessary on the Linux box to access the files on the Windos95 box.
If you want the linux box to see files that are stored on the Win95 box you need smbmount or smbclient on linux. If you want the Win95 box to see files that are stored on the linux box you need samba on linux.
3. Would want to access the internet at times from the Windos95 box through the modem in the Linux box. Normal access would be from the Linux box. Internet access would be started from the Linux box.
For this you need to look at IP-MASQ. If you also want Linux to dial up when the Win95 box tries to access the internet, you should try diald.
4. Both boxes being able to print to the printer.
This depends on what printer model it is. I would probably install samba on the Linux box and let that handle the printer. Unless it is a postscript printer, you also need ghostview, but even if you have a postscript printer, ghostview is nice to have.
5. Does the Windos box need a IP address or can it be accessed by computer name. I do not have a Windos95 book and it's help system sucks on this matter.
It needs an IP address (but you can set it up so that you can write a computer name to access it.)
Please feel free to email me direct if you feel it is necessary or the answer becomes too long. :). I feel at this point that I am going to need step by step directions to get anywhere.
As long as the question is this general, I'll just mail the list. Believe me, you are not the only one who wants to connect a Win95 box with a Linux box. Can I help me by giving some 'sample'? script or command? I would appreciate that as I still can't get things moving.
If you want the linux box to see files that are stored on the Win95 box you need smbmount or smbclient on linux.
How to mount? by name or dev or ?
If you want the Win95 box to see files that are stored on the linux box you need samba on linux.
Samba done, winbox can see the Linbox printer and able to print, but can't see any files on Linbox :(
For this you need to look at IP-MASQ. If you also want Linux to dial up when the Win95 box tries to access the internet, you should try diald.
IP-MASQ and diald done, able to ping in all direction within the network but only the Linbox able to ping the outside world by IP addr. Can you help by giving me 'sample' script or rule or whatever you call it and where it suppose to be?

At least the printer is working, my HP5L is working, it's fun :)

Sorry, don't understand. :(

use: mbmout \\\\<winname>\\<sharename> -I <winipaddress> -U <username> -c 'mount /<mountpoint>' where the bits inside the <> are bits you have to fill in. See man smbmount for more info. This command has to be run as root.

Can't help here - don't use SAMBA.
