yast2 printer setup problem

This doesn't seem to be the same issue as covered in other threads I was able to find. When I try to use yast2 to configure my parallel port connected laser printer yast opens its printer window begins to read the driver database then the printer setup window just disappears. I have checked logs for errors and not found any. Instead it seems to be proceeding just fine according to /var/log/YaST2/y2log. The output is: 2005-11-30 15:48:52 <1> linux(12447) [YCP] Printerdb.ycp:318 Checking foomatic database 2005-11-30 15:48:52 <1> linux(12447) [YCP] Printerdb.ycp:321 Database changed 2005-11-30 15:48:52 <1> linux(12447) [agent-ppd] PPDdb.cc(createdbThread):419 CreateDbThread started 2005-11-30 15:48:52 <1> linux(12447) [agent-ppd] PPDdb.cc(loadPrebuiltDatabase):1439 Database file parsed correctly by YCP parser 2005-11-30 15:48:53 <1> linux(12447) [agent-ppd] PPDdb.cc(loadPrebuiltDatabase):1670 Database contents is OK This is a 64bit mp system running a new install of Suse 10 OSS. A relatively vanilla install with the latest YOU updates and kde 3.5. Samsung ML1740 printer connected via parallel port. Any ideas where to look for clues? -- Time is the best teacher.
