9.3 install - no sound
Hi Everybody. I know that much has been tossed back and forth regarding issues with SuSE 9.3. Everything if fine for me so far - except that I have no sound . I've installed all four media updates, but I have no sound. Kmix shown mixer levels at non-zero. Everything worked in SuSE 9.2 yesterday. Helixplayer has sound, but nothing else - all works fine when in Windows (except me - hence the use of Linux). If this has already been covered, I apologize. Please hit me with a clue-stick. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@CONSOLIDATEDLINT.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

This contradicts your statement below.

Kmix shown mixer levels at non-zero. Everything worked in SuSE 9.2 yesterday.
Helixplayer has sound, but nothing else - all works fine when in Windows (except me - hence the use of Linux). If Helix player has sound, you do have sound. Is the problem all other
OK, so it is not a mixer problem. players do not have sound, are you talking about the kde system notifications and company (which may be an arts problem)? We would need more info to help. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

Go to Yast Control Center>Hardware>Sound>Volume and see if Master and PCM are turned up. Press test. For reasons I cannot fathom the mixers don't show it, if the Volume is put to 0 in the Control Center. Regards, -- Jos van Kan www.josvankan.tk

Same problem here. Master and PCM are set to maximum, but no sound. Worked perfectly in 9.2. Gil

I've had this problem with just about every version of SuSE I've installed. For me I had to start up the gamix or alsamixergui, and go through all the settings (including setting some to 0 that were all the way up) (kmix and kamix don't seem to have all the volume settings). The last time it was an AC97 volume that was at the maximum (and I don't have an active AC97 compatible soundchip) which had to be turned to 0. I don't know why, but SuSE and my SB live card have never gotten along straight from the box. It takes some fiddling in the alsamixergui, but in the end I've always managed to get 5.1 sound out of it. If anyone needs a copy of my /etc/asound.state file for reference, just send me an email. I'm sure it's not perfect, but it works for me. :) Regards, Pieter

This is NOT a volume setting problem that we are having. This is some other wonky issue. Maybe a bug in artsd or alsa? I don't know. What I do know is - It's not a volume setting thing. - It will mysteriously start working at some point (almost everyone who's reported this problem on the various SuSE groups has had it start working again, but without any indication why). - Nothing you change in the settings seems to have any affect on the problem... including playing with the sound settings in YAST and in Kcontrol. My system is once again without sound. It was working.. then it stopped. I tinkered for hours trying to find out what's wrong... nothing I did made any difference. They after one of many many reboots it started working. I worked on other things for a while and managed to screw up my kernel modules so much (tinkering and playing with recompiles just to see what 9.3 can do) that I decided that it was easier to reinstall than to try to back out my changes. After the reinstall... no sound again. Nothing I've done since will get it working again either. Seriously annoying.

Well I finally got my sound working, albeit in a bit of a round-about manner. I was trying to use the on-board sound chip on my pooter. Worked fine in 9.2 but no sound with 9.3. So I installed a spare sound card I had on the shelf (an old Aureal Vortex). Configured the sound card and pressed the volume test button - voila! Sound. However.... When I tried to play a CD there was no sound, and when I looked at the configuration for the sound card all the levels were back to "0." Very mysterious. I looked at the Yast configuration and it seemed to be trying to default back to the on-board chip. So I deleted the driver for the on-board chip, reconfigured the sound card making sure that the volume settings including the one for CD were set to maxiumum, applied, saved, and tried the CD again. This time I had sound! ;o) So I still don't know why the on-board chip was not putting out sound, but at least with the spare sound card it's now working. I'm wondering if somehow I had overlooked some setting for the on-board chip, or had neglected to click "apply"? I don't think I overlooked anything but ....?? ;o) Anyway, all is well here now. Thanks, everyone. Gil

Hi Anders,
Well thats why I sent the reply instead of putting the SOLVED in the subj line.
But you suggested Gil post a SOLVED, and it wasn't his thread to begin with

I don't know why this would be, but I found that if my Logitech QuickCam4000 is plugged-in during the install, sound is completely hosed. I don't know why yet, but once it's unplugged and SuSE 9.3 is reinstalled, everything works fine. Does anyone feel like suggesting a theory? I have a QuickCam 3000, but I did not have it connected during the OS install (Suse 9.2). However, if I happen to boot the computer with the webcam plugged in, all I get is the single slider USB mixer. I can't hear sound from my programs. Unplugging the cam does not bring my sound back. I must reboot with the cam unplugged, then plug it in after the computer is up and running. Then I have two mixer choices: the USB device and my regular SoundBlaster Live. Remember a few versions back there was a line in a file somewhere about "blacklisting" usb sound? I wonder if that is still an option?
