Telcos don't like redialling a number too soon after the previous attempt failed. Dialing is an operation they have to spend some resources (compared to an stablished connection), so they may limit the number of dials you do in a period. And some modems implement this limitation themselves, refusing to redial right after a failure. If this modem was given to you by the telco, that's what I would think first. Just wait a little time.
Thats right. I checked out in XP with proprietary software, and it was redailing fine, there was not much of a lag. But in Opensuse10.3 the modem doesn't seems to respond at redial time. I am using KPPP. even killing smppd and removing module using modprobe -r and then starting all over again does not help. I have to restart to get it working again. Anything to do with CTS/RTR settings?
Try powering off/on the modem, or unplug/replug the usb cable. You can also try to use wvdial (console program), which gives more control. Plus you can try minicom to test the modem itself. - -- Saludos Carlos E.R. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4-svn0 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHblIctTMYHG2NR9URAr7dAKCFAanJO6hKILaIDtcdhGGQ0yNk3QCfVH1U kXAujD0lm6gluJyBiNNT+iI= =wrQy -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
My initial post was about how to get working a modem in openSuSE10.2. I see that now the topic has changed. However, in my case I am not able to connect to modem with minicom. In Yast, hardware information, the modem seems to be correctly recognized: SGS Thomson Microelectronics. When I try to connect with kppp I get the message: "modem is busy". Any suggestions how can I solve this problem? On 12/23/07, Carlos E. R. <robin.listas@telefonica.net> wrote:

What error does it give?

Sounds famimiliar, but never happened to me, so I don't know. We have to determine if "busy" refers to the phone line (it thinks it is busy) or to the device. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
