I am having a problem reinstalling OpenOffice in SuSE 8.2. Recently I uninstalled the default user account install of OpenOffice after finding a problem with the original installation: Whenever I activated the drop down font selection field in the main tool bar, OO completely locked up everything in the X display. So I thought perhaps that the installation was corrupt or misconfigured. Therefore I tried reinstalling to see if that would help. Now I can not reinstall SuSE 8.2 OpenOffice. And yes I ran setup from /opt/openoffice*/ . But each time I run the setup program I get this: Preparing to use the default configuration: Saving conflicting files... /home/nightgallery/OpenOffice.org -> /home/nightgallery/OpenOffice.org.old /home/nightgallery/.user60.rdb -> /home/nightgallery/.user60.rdb.old Installing default configuration... /usr/X11R6/bin/OOo: line 855: 7826 Segmentation fault $OOo_GLOBAL_HOME/program/setup -R:$OOo_RESPONSE_TMPFILE Error: The default configuration was not created. Error: Try again or try to run "OOo-wrapper --skip-check" And I ran with: ~$ OOo-wrapper --skip-check And although the OO installation dialogs appear, after working through the dialogs and clicking on the final "install button" OO proceeds to crash. Some one please help me with this one. Thanks. -- Remember: Always think positively and you will prevail. http://www.tuxgames.com http://www.suse.com http://www.linuxformat.co.uk http://www.linuxjournal.com http://www.transgaming.com

Bruce please, there is no reason to take such a negative attitude. I have a valid question involving SuSE Linux 8.2. If you don't like me asking questions on this list then perhaps you should filter or ignore my posts. One might assume, and rightly so, that this is a forum for list members to ask questions and hopefully get positive and helpful answers. One might also assume that this is not a forum for members to criticize each other. When I last checked, it was apparent that SuSE Linux LLC own and maintain this list, and membership in this group does not extend, or transfer ownership of this list to its members. Thank you. -- Remember: Always think positively and you will prevail. http://www.tuxgames.com http://www.suse.com http://www.linuxformat.co.uk http://www.linuxjournal.com http://www.transgaming.com

reinstall SuSE 8.2 OpenOffice. And yes I ran setup from /opt/openoffice*/ . But each time I run the setup program I get this:

I think there is something wrong with this guy's MTA.. When I posted to the list, I got the same reply back as I sent... and one went on the list with just a "?" .... I just killed the guy at SMTP, or filter him out.. It is almost like he has a broken "on vacation" type thing.. He obviously does not know what he is doing.... much like me most of the time... <vbg> -- Gary

It has nothing to do with any of that. But your sugestions are good ones. I know what im doing. I am hoping to find an answer. Well, I just got a 'somewhat' polite reply from the guy and I think he knows that he is repeatedly asking the same question. At least he didn't mention having any problems... (but maybe he doesn't know)

Dear Bruce, Just re-install the whole package again and don't forget to backup your files beforehand. Also I do not mean the OOpware, reather you should go ahead and install the complete SuSE 8.2. The other option is to go on as root and re-install OOp and then retry the whole thing again. Kudos to you. Abhijit On Sat, 12 Jul 2003, gary wrote:

The script /usr/X11R6/bin/OOo is a script (so anyone with modest bash skills can see what it is doing). Line 855 is the end of a nested if. This is based on the --skip-check and other conditions and results in the "--skip-check" message. Backtracing from there indicates that previous installs will have a 'response' file in /etc/OpenOffice.org/ and that response file probably does not get removed during an uninstall. Suggest you check whether there is a response file, and if so, try removing it. Let us know what happens. /Hans ps: Since I suspect I'm already in his kill file, someone else may want to repeat this to the OP

Hans, well said. I suspected something like this but was not able to "put" it as well as you just have. Please read the following. Its an update on my situation that I posted in responce to Ben. I have aready recovered a disk image from about two weeks ago, and now I am back being able to run OO and also back to the problem that cuased me to try and reinstall the OO in the first place. Everything works fine in OO, until I click on the font drop down list in the tool bar of OO. As soon as I do that a small blank or "obscured?" OO dialog appears accompanied by a system beep, and emediately the X server locks up. I have to CTRL+ALT+F1 and log in as root to kill soffice.bin and then X is released from being "locked." Ben, (Hans) what should I do to fix this? What do you think? Thanks, Max. -- Remember: Always think positively and you will prevail. http://www.tuxgames.com http://www.suse.com http://www.linuxformat.co.uk http://www.linuxjournal.com http://www.transgaming.com
My experience on SuSE 8.2 with the supplied OOo is: the Font drop-down box will, when opened, immediately grab focus from the entire XWindows environment and will stop input anywhere else, but when selecting a font and closing the drop down, everything returns to 'normal' operation. I do not get a blank or obscured dialog. I do not get a system beep. And the system does not lock up. Since I do not change font often, this is not an issue for me (in other words, for me it's not worth pursuing.) My environment is SuSE 8.2 loaded on a clean machine from SuSE supplied DVD. I would suspect a corrupt image. If you can verify that the image (even the image on your CD if you bought the distro) is clean, then I consider this focus problem an OOo bug and find it unlikely to be specific to SuSE. Specific advice: 1) Leave everything as it is, but change your habits related to managing fonts ... for example, worry about the content first and then go back and prettify things through font changes after the content is good. -or- 2) Download a fresh image of 8.2 or at least the OOo portion. Try reinstalling after made sure >>everything, everywhere<< has been removed. -or- 3) Consider upgrading to OOo 1.0.3 in any case.

I have Knoppix with OOo 1.0.3 on another partition. It behaves exactly as you describe. Ie, when the font box in OOo is open, I can't "input" anywhere else. Abiword lets me click once on, eg, another desktop (which closes the font box) and a second click switches to that desktop. KWord switches immediately to the other desktop but, when I go back to KWord's desktop, the font box is closed and the cursor is in the font box.

It certainly seems to be an OOo bug. <snip> -- Vic Ayres http://www.buckiechoral.org.uk

You might want to make sure the you have the fonts installed correctly as that can cause problems such as yours. Ken
I came across this a while ago, and chalked it up to OOo's history as an application that once included it's own full desktop.... Comments inline. On Sunday 13 July 2003 9:36 pm, Hans Forbrich wrote:

It is an OOo bug. And not just with the font pull down -- it's the same with _all_ the menus. e.g. click on the file menu to pull it down. Now try to click outside the OOo window. The only way to get rid of the menu is to click inside the OOo window, or select an option with the keyboard. Tested using 1.0.3.1 from Openoffice.org.

The good news is the new OOo 1.1RC behaves correctly, and doesn't take over your machine in this way. And it works when the system is under load, too. And take about 3 seconds to load into a Writer window, and.... ;-) It's good. Jason
