[opensuse] Deafult repo retry time
Is it possible to decrease the time (defaults 30 secs or so) for the repo timeout (i.e. when a particular package/rpm can't be got in a repo, during online update or software installation) -perhaps by editing a system file ? The above thread says - | echo "connect-timeout = number-of-seconds-you-want" >> /root/.curlrc This is to be typed into console as root ? (su -) ? My problem (OP) is similar to the one mentioned in this thread in openSUSE Mail List archive: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2009-01/msg01626.html. As Basil says in his reply (http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2009-01/msg01742.html), the problem is not from the ISP side, i.e. _in spite of a proper functional connection to the Net _, YaST (am talking about the YaST GUI interface, not zypper CLI ... - YAST --> Software --> Software Management / Online Update ... same timeout message appears in both cases). The timeout message says "Retrying in _30 secs_" (I think default is 30 secs, but before this message pops-up, the RPM/package download window kind-of 'hangs' mid-way between an incomplete download (not due to ISP problem, but most likely due to some error/ repo server-side issue; this is *before* the timeout window pops-up). Is there a way to decrease the timeout for - (a) while the rpm/package download hangs & _before_ the pop-up window appears. (b) after the pop-up window has appeared (the timeout for this, as given in the 'Retrying after ____ secs ... defaults at 30 secs, I think) This is my basic question. It is a bit difficult to explain (perhaps a screenshot would help & will post one when I next do an update & when this behaviour occurs), but I hope I have been able to convey gist of the problem. PS: About my question to Carlos' reply (quote above), I am relatively new to Linux (about 4 mo) and have used CLI infrequently, so not too familiar with it. Yes... but I would rather edit the file with an editor - but I don't even have that file.

Then I would be rather hesitant about what to recommend. You'd have to experiment. Look at the sourcecode, perhaps... Are you using 11.1? You can try another thing. Type: export ZYPP_ARIA2C=1 in the same xterm where you start zypper or yast, as root. This is an experimental feature, it changes the download program and method to a new one. If it works, it does work better and faster, but I say that it is experimental and I mean it: they want people reporting how it works, problems, etc. It has known bugs, like repo modification not working. However, it is expected to gracefully solve access or timeout problems. If you search the archive for that token you will find the original mail where this was reported. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Zypper repo adding works, its only yast that doesn't.

That's good to know. I only have a test partition with 11.1, which I can not fully use, there are pending bugs to solve. zypper in chrooted distro works. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. the folks on the zypp-devel@opensuse.org mailing list might be able to give more specific advice.

Carlos, thanks for pointing to this. It is important to get feedback about this experimental stuff. I am updating the page http://en.opensuse.org/Libzypp/Failover with known issues and the status quo. Dave, thanks for the hint with the different behaviour of YaST and zypper. I updated the wiki page with that info. Welcome! If you are curious, I'm using it on my test 11.1 partition, which is mounted on 11.0, and on which I do a chroot, and then run the 11.1 version of zypper to update that test partition. Works fine :-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. As mentioned earlier, I am a beginner with Linux & openSUSE 11 is the first Linux version I have tried (after 2 failed Fedora 9 installs due to nVidia Graphics Card driver problem). It is a relatively easier ditribution to install and learn on (dual-boot with Windows XP). Since the feature is experimental, I will not try it at this stage- would rather wait till a stable tested version is released (maybe in oS 11.2 ?). Till then, I can live with the timeout thing, it is not a big issue/ bug.
