[opensuse] Noted problems with 11.1
As someone else has noted, k3b only runs as root! We had this problem sometime ago, and now it's back!! Multimedia problems abound...still! This just simply shouldn't be happening! 'Clean installs, ALL proper files installed from packman, and STILL playing DVDs is a "no go!" DVDs play fine for me. You need libdvdcss which is NOT in packman. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That, and a number of other files.....I have ALL the files required. The error now is that it's possible I don't have permission to access the drive, which I do. I also have k3b NOT accessing the burner without being root, which others have reported. This is an old problem that has resurfaced. Agree with you Fred - even though I did state to you that I was able to play DVDs earlier this week/end of last week (for which I apologise). Under the complete and clean install of oS 11.1 with KDE4.x I *cannot* get kaffeine or xine to play a DVD -- because there are not the necessary codecs inslalled (according to the error message/s). Which is simply, pure, unadulterated BS because I have all the necessary files/RPMs installed! AND the directories where the necessary files are installed for both kaffeing and xine to play the DVDs are as required. As far as oS 11.1 is concerned, it is a mess with respect to multimedia/DVDs. Running as root for k3b and k9 and anyting associated with multimedia has resulted in..... a... (modesty prevents me from typing the word). Have you installed the packman versions of those packages? I've the problem, that I simultaniously use the KDE backports, which seems to provide a "newer" version of Kaffeine, and installs this version over the packman version... Which results in a nice message telling me that I cannot play back such DVDs. (manually changing the version in yast helps) Regards Michael

Something I had tried was running Kaffeine as root. 'Sure 'nuff....DVDs play with NO problem, so YES, Marcus, the old bug that is back is causing this problem. See....told ya. :)

Yep....same here. I've put ALL upgrades on hold till this is fixed! 11.1 SHOULDN'T have release with this problem!

'Sure is!

Yep.......I'm anything but happy at this point. Upgrades from 11.0 are "hit and miss" in regards to multimedia....I've only had 1 with no problems, but am holding my breath waiting for a phone call. :( Fred -- "Politicians and diapers need to be changed regularly -- and for the same reason." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have already assigned the bug to the right person. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Another thing I've noticed is that a user can't update software, except by using Yast, which requires root password. As I recall in 11.0 you could allow a user to run updates, but I don't see that in 11.1. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't know of anyway to do it. Jason Perlow, who writes for ZDNet, and is someone I've known for a number of years, is correct about what he says about 11.1.....pushed out the door TOO FAST. A user can install updates, install RPMs etc after being allowed to. (Updates I think are allowed always.) We use PackageKit which gives out this kind of control. The KDE and GNOME update applets use PackageKit for this, and it will pop up a dialog requesting permissions if necessary. There is also the GTK PackageKit UI tools (PolicyKit-gnome RPM I think) which have the package handling at userlevel. Also run under KDE if you want to test them.
