Thanks to everyone who replied to my plea. But rather than trying to get SANE to work - one cannot ignore the irony of that acronym - I opted instead to use Hamrick software's Vuescan package http://www.hamrick.com. Like Tony says, It's GRRRRREAT! If you're having trouble getting your scanner to work, check it out.

I went to d'l it, but the only version I could get is for 'Bloze, even though they list Linux.
