Hi All, I'm a newbie to Linux, formerly DR-Dos, MS-Dos, W3.1, W3.11, W95, W98, NT. Been lurking on the list for a couple of months hoping to gain some useful tips before installing 6.4, frankly 80% of the postings relate to quite severe problems so things do not auger well!!! System is AMD Athlon 500, 128m Ram, 17G HD, 3D S320 II Ultra 32meg vid,PCI modem - K56, Trust 19200 USB scanner, HP 610C printer, DVD, Cd-RW. All of which run perfectly under 95 & 98 10G dedicated to SuSE 6.4 Now on my 4th install in a week, default option.(Yast 2) KDE etc sets up fine but ALSA will not run, SANE will not run,Linux does not recognise the modem, Yast will not add or delete, kpackage is duff but the kpackage.3 patch will not load (had to download using Win and transfer to floppy), most of the included progs either do not run/lock the box/give "cannot execute" messages, etc etc etc (why even bother to include them on the CD's) ANY help appreciated, BUT if this is the "normal" state of affairs with the Linux system then I think that "Uncle Bill" can sleep soundly at night, it's a "no contest" to Microshaft with all it's faults. I'm prepared to persevere for another month or so, from "the literatue" Linux has what I need, and I want to dump MS, but the trash can is beginning to look a likely depository for 6 CD's.(will probably use them as bird scarers in the garden) It would be interesting to find out how many people in a 1000 that start trying to use Linux actually stay with it, and have a "useable" system. Sorry about the moans but I'm getting very frustrated. What error message do you get from Alsa? What is your sound hardware?
SANE will not run,
What error message do you get from SANE?
Linux does not recognise the modem
What error message do you get? Your modem is a PCI one, which suggests it's a Winmodem. If it is, it's not going to work with Linux (unless you can persuade the vendor to release a driver for it).
Yast will not add or delete,
What error message do you get from Yast?
kpackage is duff but the kpackage.3 patch will not load
What error message do you get from the kpackage patch?
floppy), most of the included progs either do not run
What error message do most of the included progs give?
/lock the box/give "cannot execute" messages, etc etc etc (why even bother to include them on the CD's)
Because they work fine on a properly configured system.
ANY help appreciated, BUT if this is the "normal" state of affairs with the Linux system then I think that "Uncle Bill" can sleep soundly at night, it's a "no contest" to Microshaft with all it's faults.
This isn't normal. You should have asked ages ago, rather than getting irritated with it! You do need to learn a lot in order to use Linux effectively, and the best way to learn is to ask. Pick one topic you want to get working and concentrate on it. Post a request for help to this list giving all the information you can. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

This is like reading the obituaries and wondering why everybody is dying all the time ;-) Simply put: people don't email to ask for help if there are no problems.

Your 'modem' is a winmodem. It is only made to run on windows. Maybe there is a driver at www.linmodems.org, but this is really the fault of the penny pinching companies hoping to save a buck and sell you an inferior modem. Thier drivers are binary and they do not tell Linux developers the specification. You should check the hardware database to see what your hardware is supported by Linux: http://cdb.suse.de/cdb_english.html

As Derek said, you should send us the error messages for each of these problems. As it stands, there could be several different reasons, but we can't help unless you guide us to the correct one. Have you read how to install in the SuSE manual?

I installed 6.2 with zero serious problems in half an hour, so I can only speak from my own perspective. Installing windows was much more of a pain to me! Of course, all of my hardware was supported. Sad truth. But that's what we're here for, right?!?! ;)

Hold on, there, cowboy. Not all PCI modems are WinModems. Once you have Linux running, do an `/sbin/lspci' and post the results here so that we can determine if and what course of action is appropriate.
You should check the hardware database to see what your hardware is supported by Linux:
Always a good idea :).

I got to a point once where I could install 5.3 or 6.0 with my eyes closed. It's not difficult, once you understand what's going on.
