Hi All, I'm a newbie to Linux, formerly DR-Dos, MS-Dos, W3.1, W3.11, W95, W98, NT. Been lurking on the list for a couple of months hoping to gain some useful tips before installing 6.4, frankly 80% of the postings relate to quite severe problems so things do not auger well!!! System is AMD Athlon 500, 128m Ram, 17G HD, 3D S320 II Ultra 32meg vid,PCI modem - K56, Trust 19200 USB scanner, HP 610C printer, DVD, Cd-RW. All of which run perfectly under 95 & 98 10G dedicated to SuSE 6.4 Now on my 4th install in a week, default option.(Yast 2) KDE etc sets up fine but ALSA will not run, SANE will not run,Linux does not recognise the modem, Yast will not add or delete, kpackage is duff but the kpackage.3 patch will not load (had to download using Win and transfer to floppy), most of the included progs either do not run/lock the box/give "cannot execute" messages, etc etc etc (why even bother to include them on the CD's) ANY help appreciated, BUT if this is the "normal" state of affairs with the Linux system then I think that "Uncle Bill" can sleep soundly at night, it's a "no contest" to Microshaft with all it's faults. I'm prepared to persevere for another month or so, from "the literatue" Linux has what I need, and I want to dump MS, but the trash can is beginning to look a likely depository for 6 CD's.(will probably use them as bird scarers in the garden) It would be interesting to find out how many people in a 1000 that start trying to use Linux actually stay with it, and have a "useable" system. Sorry about the moans but I'm getting very frustrated.
