Try "unset LANG". You also might need to "export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5". Check out these links. http://www.suse.de/en/business/certifications/certified_software/oracle/db/8... http://www.suse.de/en/business/certifications/certified_software/oracle/db/8... I don't know which version of Oracle comes with the book but I recommend downloading 8i (8.1.7) from OTN. Enjoy, Mark Stahlke -- Powered by SuSE Linux Just Say No To Windows

that did it thanks, i never would thought about it....how did you know that?
Been there. Done that. Have the scars to prove it. :^) At one point I had both Oracle 8.1.7 and 9.0.1 running on my SuSE 7.3 box. Three instances running, heavy swapping - it was gruesome. Cheers, Mark Stahlke -- Powered by SuSE Linux Just Say No To Windows

he probably uses the correct mailinglist: suse-oracle@suse.com see http://www.suse.com/oracle/

Of couse I do. I couldn't live without it. :^) I'm sure I'll be posting a lot of questions about installing 9iAS on SLES8 on that list next week. -- Powered by SuSE Linux Just Say No To Windows

what is OTN? Oracle Technology Network http://otn.oracle.com/software/content.html I think it requires a free registration. You can download most Oracle

Another good resource is the suse-oracle mailing list archive http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-oracle/ I have access to MetaLink (Oralce's support forum - Oracle maintenance contract required) so if you run into problems I can poke around there. I'm an Oracle DBA by day, but I'm hardly an expert. ;^) Cheers, Mark Stahlke -- Powered by SuSE Linux Just Say No To Windows

Might want to check the amount of tmp space you have. The geniuses in ST(base development) at Oracle use a varible called TEMP it needs at least 500megs. Try setting it to a directory with lots of space. Wait 'til you try 9i, I think it needs 1gig of TEMP space! good luck, brian (former office/cubicle groundling for Uncle Larry) -- Brian Jackson Photo http://www.brianjacksonphoto.com Action Athletics "Sports Photography for You" http://www.actionathletics.com
