RE: [SLE] Hard Disk selection for 2940UW Controller

Hi,
I'm looking at getting a new 9 GB hard disk. When looking at the different drives available I'm a bit confused regarding LVD SCSI drives and to whether they are compatible with the Adaptec 2940UW adapter.
Any recommendations on a suitable drives for this controller.
I picked up a 9 GB IBM LVD drive a few months ago for ~$250 US. There are jumpers on it to make it compatible with UW (non-LVD) controllers. I am quite pleased with its performance and am planning to get another one for my Alpha (which has a non-LVD wide controller) when cash will allow. I'm fairly certain most (all?) LVD drives have a similiar setup for backward compatibility but you should check to be absolutely certain. Data sheets should be available on the manufacturers web sites Tim -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Along these lines does anyone know of any Linux references to SCSI-3? I just bought a WDE 18310 and the Adaptec 29160 controller. This is the biggest incremental increase in speed I've seen since I long ago went from a 80286 to 80386 computer. I could find no Linux references to SCSI-3 anywhere, but experimented and found that the AIC7xxx module worked with the card. Rob. Tim Duggan wrote:

buying LVD hd (80Mo/s) is a loss of money (and performances) with UW card (40Mo/s)! you lose cable length capabilities and power savings Low Voltage Differential provides. anyway, I suggest IBM drives for both u2w (ie lvd) or uw cards. there's no need to configure a jumper because a lvd drive will drop performances down to uw one on a uw card, but you may use SE/mode jumper on to force uw mode (se= single-ended) Tim Duggan wrote:
