Works perfectly here (but I cannot get my Lexmark Laser 4039 to print :-( ). Do you have the USB cable plugged into the right hole? It's easy enough to plug it into the network port. If it is plugged in correctly then I suggest you REMOVE it in Yast's Control Centre/Hardware, unplug the power supply of the printer, plug the power back in again and let 10.3 come up with the message Found New Hardware -- or use Control Centre's Options Restart Detection of printers; the printer should be detected as an HP 8400 series printer. Thanks for your replies Basil and Joe. I've tried the things that both suggested, without success. If I reconfigure the printer in Yast then it will work until the printer is switched off and on again. I have been using openSuse for some time. Printing was OK with 10.0. 10.1 and 10.2, but when I upgraded to 10.3 the

I installed Kubuntu and there was abolutely no problem with the same printer. I also have a Microsoft (spit !) box and it works OK with the same printer. I have read another list where someone was having the same problem with the same setup ie. 10.3 and HP Photosmart, however the guy was not given a satisfactory reply. The 10.3 that I am using is the downloaded version from a reputable provider. I am contemplating buying the boxed version of 10.3 - but it is still a risk, although it comes with 90 days support. My other alternative is to re-install Kubuntu, but the problem with that is no Realplayer and no Flashplayer. My preference is to continue with openSuse 10.3. because I have grown used to it and I lke it (when it works properly :-) ) I need someone to say "yes I had that problem and I solved it by ............. So which is it, no success in getting it to print (i.e. initial config), or inability to print after it is turned off and on? That is 2 different problems. And you give no error info to give us any clues to even try to help. Assuming you have it working with hplip, what is the output of hp-check? Also, your problem sounds familiar to a bug in cups-autoconfig. See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=334166 for more info, or maybe uninstall cups-autoconfig.

I am not sure you have given enough info for anyone to even be sure what your problem is, to be able to say "I had that problem" so they cannot say "I solved it by ..." What does /var/log/messages say when it is turned back on? Have you tried restarting cups? What does /var/log/cups/error_log say when it fails? What is output of lpstat -t when working or when it fails? Info helps in troubleshooting remotely, lack of info makes it almost impossible. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've just had a look at the above bug report and on 7 January 2008 it was marked as "RESOLVED". Well, it hasn't been as far as I am concerned because I just looked at my (new) installation of 10.3 on another computer and see that the DisablePrinters........ parameter is STILL set to YES as a (?)default. Thanks to you I now have my printer working normally again :-) The answer was in: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=334166 Changing "yes" to "no" in the following config file resolved the problem: /etc/cups-autoconfig.conf DisablePrintersOnRemoval=no Easy when you know how ! I am extremely grateful to you. It appears the error has not yet been corrected - I re-installed all the cups files to see if that would work, but it may have taken that file off the DVD I've been told that there is another bug - see id=350956 Thanks again - Charles -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Did you set it up with hplip? It is supported by hplip http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/photosmart.html It should work easily with hplip. To install it, try as root hp-setup. Yast should also be able, but if not, try hp-setup. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Does that printer work with other applications? It will work with any application except when it is switched off and then on again. i.e. when it is switched back on it will not work at all.

Charles, I don't know if the bug is in CUPS or hlip, the HP driver. But I DO know a work around. On your utilities menu is "Printing." Choose the HP option. You MAY have to do so as root. You'll have to "start" the printer in there.....done. You can also check ink levels, etc. Fred -- A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. From the CUPS point of view it is a "third-party" tool. It was introduced by our "Desktop" team/department to make
See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=334166 Since openSUSE 10.3 we have the new RPM "cups-autoconfig" which contains a utility for auto-configuring USB printers which is triggered by udev/HAL device events. Note that this tool neither comes from the CUPS authors nor is the RPM a sub-package of the cups RPM. printing more convenient in particular for "Desktop" users. By default it disables/enables print queues when udev/HAL events appear that a USB printer is disconnected/connected. Its /etc/cups-autoconfig.conf contains by default: -------------------------------------------------------------- [CUPS] ConfigureNewPrinters=yes DisablePrintersOnRemoval=yes DefaultCUPSPolicy=relaxed Debug=yes -------------------------------------------------------------- It is triggered via /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-cups-autoconfig.fdi which runs /usr/lib/cups-autoconfig/cups-autoconfig which does the actual stuff, see /usr/lib/cups-autoconfig/cups-autoconfig --help (you must run even '--help' as root, otherwise you get errors) Debugging output is in /var/log/cups-autoconfig.log If you don't like what cups-autoconfig does (i.e. if you prefer that you control the print queues and not whatever automatism), uninstall the cups-autoconfig package and reboot (or restart HAL) to make HAL aware of its changed config files, see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=218393#c28 For some background information, see http://code.google.com/p/cups-autoconfig/ Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany AG Nuernberg, HRB 16746, GF: Markus Rex -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
