Flash drive problem on Suse 8.2
I have a Sony MicroVault 128MB flash memory USB2 storage device, a pen drive or whatever it is called, which works fine in Windows. One of the reasons I bought Suse was that it claims to work with USB2 devices. When I plug it into my PC, after a few seconds, a new icon appears on my Suse desktop with the title sda1, but when I right click on it and try to mount it, or try to mount it from a command line, using: mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 I get an error message saying that the file system type is not supported. The curious thing is that if I then unplug it, the icon disappears... I enclose a part of the contents of /var/log/messages at the end of this email if it helps. I have tried formatting the thing under windows as both FAT and also FAT32 but get the same error.... I've got a usb drive as well, but don't need to mount it. Just plug it in and it automounts as /media/sda1. Can you access it at all after you plug it in without manually trying to mount it? Ken
Hi Ken:

No. I have tried, the /media/sda1 directory is empty. I am not sure what the problem actually is but it is not due to the file system type, regardless of the error message given, becuase in Windows I have formatted the flash memory as NTFS and I have a partition of NTFS actually mounted in SUSE which is correctly seen... Any other suggestions, thanks? Tim
I don't even qualify as a rank amateur with Linux; I'm still at the drooling idiot stage. Still, with patient advice from people on this list, I realized that my own USB memory stick was working perfectly in SuSE (as well as that other OS). If you get nowhere with your Sony, consider getting a "V-Drive USB Flash Drive" ( http://www.v-tec.com.tw/ ); admittedly mine is only 64MB, but it cost me just three thousand yen (22 euros) and the company also makes 128MB (and higher-capacity) models.
