[S.u.S.E. Linux] New Modem Problems -- Help!
Hi All! Last Saturaday night we had an lighting storm and my modem got burned up. :( So Monday I got a new one. But I can only get it to work under M$. HELP! I had a USR 14,400 Internal Fax/Modem. My new one is a Rockwell 56k Internal Fax/Modem. This is not a P-n-P Modem (I hope) and I have the dips set to com 3 / irq4. I don't know what to do or what to send to the list. I added the /var/log/messages file part from when I tried it. One time it told me "No Carrier" Can anyone help me?? Thanks JIM </PRE> <PRE>

Are you using your old modem's init string with your new modem? I would guess that they wouldn't be compatible since your new modem is has a Rockwell chipset and your old one had a USR. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I'd try your initialization string. Call up minicom... type in this exact sequence and see if it gives you OK or ERROR AT&F&C1H1L2S9=15 It seems your modem is responding ERROR to it and if it's Hayes Compatible, the extra newline shouldn't make a difference at all. On 09-Aug-98 Jim Hatridge wrote:

PLEASE help this M$ synner! I'm trapped in M$ mail and explorer hell untill one of you GOOD people tell me where I'm going wrong!
script I get the errors listed in the log file. I'm betting it's the "^M" in log file that is causing the problem. But as you can see in my pppchat there is no "^M".
Help put me out of my misery!

I think what happens is that the "^M" (which means "LF/CR") is sent after each "AT" command, and that the new modem reacts differently on these than the old one did. So, you can try inserting a ";" at the end of the command, which should prevent the "^M" from being sent. Maybe this helps (and if not, don't flame me, i'm a "synner", too, 'cause of... "WinModem", you know what I mean...) Another "guess" : Do you get the "OK" expected, or is the answer "Chat now working" instead ??? <include standard disclaimer here> CU !
