Re: [SuSE Linux] Setting up XF86 and my G200 - Help
This is a common problem when using windows95. It ONLY uses filenames to guess what kind of file something is, and *.rpm just happens to mean a RealPlayerModule (if the RealPlayer is installed) The solution is to use a ftp program, or download instead of opening in Netscape/IE/whatever (usually shift+click or right-click->save-as will do the trick) If you have the full adress of a file on ftp, just write it without the /matrox.rpm, then you can select it from the file list in your browser. regards Ole On Tue, 29 Dec 1998, Yatsen Ng wrote:
I tried to download the matrox.rpm from the SuSE ftp site but didn't quite succeed in doing so. Keep in mind that I tried to download using windows, since I haven't managed to set up linux yet because of all this crap I'm running into (I'm trying to, that's why I keep posting these messages!). First of all, the RealPlayer plugin looks kind of weird (all bloated) and second, after the download I get an error message when I try to play the thing. This is the first time I've encountered RealPlayer during a download. What's the deal with this? The bottomline is; I can't download from the SuSE ftp site. I also looked for the matrox.rpm on the XFree86 site but couldn't find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

and learned that the MGA driver in the current SVGA server (XF86_SVGA) supports the G200. O.k., so far so good. The thing is; that server was already included in the original package and if I recall correctly you choose the server after you specify your the card. That's where the problem is, really; The G200 isn't specified so I'd guess that it's the driver that's not included. What it all boils down to is; is the
I've done it this way, and it worked for both my Matrox Mill II's and my G200--
1. Download either (a) the XF86Setup, xsvga, XFree86 3.3.2 that came with the SuSE 5.3 CD + the special matrox.rpm (has the G200 driver) from the SuSE ftp site; or, (b) the XFree86-3.3.3-3.rpm (which includes the Matrox G2 driver in its SVGA server) + whatever xfonts you want (xfnt100.., xfntbig..., xfntscl... + xfsetup-3.3.3-3.i386.rpm + xsvga-3.3.3-3.i386.rpm).
2. Install either (a) or (b) using rpm -Uhv <whateverthenameis>.rpm --force
3. Then run XF86Setup and pick your mouse, kbd, video card, monitor limits, resolution + color depth, then try it.

Thank you all for helping me out - especially Jep Hill and Ole Hansen, since their tips were especially crucial. It might be small potatoes to you guys but getting my configuration right, at least as far as my graphic card goes, gives me a great deal of satisfaction. A sense of achievment so to speak. But anyway, for the newbies like me who want to know how I did it, I'd be happy to share my experiences. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
