[opensuse] Printer installation issues (Xerox Phaser 6128)
I am trying to install the printer Xerox Phaser 6128MFP. I'm using opensuse 12.2, 64 bits. First I tried from the usb, but it was not detected in neither yast or lsusb. Then I tried to install it from the internet cable. I downloaded the drivers from Xerox and connected the printer to my router. Yast could detect it and pointed to the correct driver. Nevertheless for some reason I cannot print a test page (or any other thing). I click the button to print the test, ask for the 1 page test, but nothing happens. After diverse tries, I am asking for help from you. Below I am sending all the entries in the log file /var/log/cups/error_log that are related to this xerox printer. Make sure the print queue isn't backed up by a bunch of failed print jobs. They don't just disappear on their own, you have to delete them from the queue. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Carl From a command line, lprm ought to clear your print queue.

Hi, thanks, but up to now no solution. I cleared the print jobs, restarted opensuse, cleared again the print jobs to be sure, and yet the test page (from yast) is not printed. After logout and login, one improvement was that now I can change and save the configuration of cups from localhost:631. I marked the following itens: Show printers shared by other systems; Share printers connected to this system; Allow printing from the Internet; Allow remote administration; Save debugging information for troubleshooting. But yet I cannot print test pages.
Always sure you have proper access to the cups printing system by adding your user to the lp group. This will require that you logout/login for the change to take > effect.
I am unsure if with the above I am already a lp registred user or not. I tried to look for information on this, but my internet connection now is unstable. I just tried to print a test page from CUPS (localhost:631). And I received the error message : "Unable to open print file: No such file or directory". Below I am sending an extract of the new error log (extracted from localhost:631). I just tried to print a test page from CUPS (localhost:631). And I received the error message : "Unable to open print file: No such file or directory".
THis may or may not be relevant.... A while back, I got that message as a resu;lt of an access control issue. It turned out that /dev/lp0 was owned by root.root and inacessible to the cups program which was running with uid=lp Of course how that ends up will depends on the version you are running. Please don't reply to *BOTH* the slit and the individual -- its redundant. If you are going to reply to *JUST ME* then please add "OFF LIST" to the subject line and leave "[opensuse]" there. I did ask how they were connected. That's because, even with the information above, I can come up with a scenario where more than one printer is physically connected and its not a cups problem. For example, one is connected via the lp port and one is connected via a serial port. or USB port. Or network. So yes, the ** issue I suggested **, that of ** access control ** _could_ be the reason. So I ask again, how are these printers connected? Neither www.openprinting.org/ or http://www.cups.org show the printer as being supported. That does not mean it will not work only that it is not likely to work as the OP has stated. I think you are so missing the point I'm trying to make about access. I have a working print system. But when I ran an update or installed a new package then suseconfig would run and the entry in the /etc/permissions I had chosen, and then reset crw-rw----+ 1 root lp 6, 0 xxxxxxxxxxx /dev/lp0 to crw-rw----+ 1 root root 6, 0 xxxxxxxxxxx /dev/lp0 and the print system stopped working ... for that printer. But it *was* working. (And oh, yes, if I rebooted!) Now I can imagine - I'm not saying it is, just that is its possible - that the OP in a similar situation. The port the 6128 is on is inaccessible to the CUPs system. Until the OP tells us how the two printers are connected we cannot discount this. And even so, there may be other issues ... From the OP's first post: "I am trying to install the printer Xerox Phaser 6128MFP. I'm using opensuse 12.2, 64 bits. *First I tried from the usb, but it was not detected in neither yast or lsusb.* *Then I tried to install it from the internet cable.* I downloaded the drivers from Xerox and connected the printer to my router. Yast could detect it and pointed to the correct driver. Nevertheless for some reason I cannot print a test page (or any other thing). I don't understand why you guys are so eager to give up, give up so easily. If this were me, I'd be testing the printer to make sure that it was accessible. I had a Brother which had parallel, usb and network ports. I tested it using all three, not because I had problems, but "just in case" at some future time I might need to change configuration. Testing on a parallel port or use is easy: cat a postscript file :-) With the network you need to determine the address and then use netcat. So Yast can't print a test page. Big deal; yast is the be all and end all. Work backwards from the printer. Check each step. Heck, vendors/suppliers have been known to ship defective or obsolete product. Get 'under the hood' and find out why the back end isn't sending the formatted file down the line. And yes, I've done this in the past and had to edit incorrect PPD files. Send me a printer I can use to test with and I'll keep trying. Let me say it again, the printer is _not_ in any "supported" list. My best guess without having a printer to test with is an incorrect port number when connected by the network cable. But then the OP stated it was seen but would not print. Ken, you've been using Linux for long enough to remember when just about everything we could attach was 'unsupported'. I've written PPDs and on one occasion a disk driver for 'unsupported' features, and many people here have reversed engineered undocumented hardware features. Unsupported doesn't mean unusable. In due course the OP will report more details following suggestions I've made off list. Let's leave it until then. -- Light a fire for an idiot and he'll be warm for a night. In the Xerox site there is no detailed information on the installation, but I just realized that inside the downloaded compressed file there is a readme file. I copied it just below this message. With this new information, I removed the drivers and proceed with the installation direct form cups (previously I used yast), as stated in the readme. Nevertheless, an issue appear inside cups: I cannot add a printer (step 2.2.2 in the readme file). I receive the message: "Unable to add printer: Forbidden" . I'm using cups 1.5.3. All other options I can change and save in cups (using root password), but I cannot add a printer. Sorry if I seem pedantic. BTDT. Its almost always an access permission issue, like I said. Working within cups rather than yast lets you do things with visibility that you can't get when you have more layers insulating you. Work on the cups config files ... Like it says at the top of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, read the man page[1]. It then says # Log general information in error_log - change "warn" to "debug" # for troubleshooting... Yes, do that, turn on verbose Cups logging, then do the wash/lather/repeat bit to get the error message again and then search for the printer in the log file. # tail -200 /var/log/cups/error_log ... ah, clues! Well, YMMV. You may now need to check access, ls, lsusb, whatever. You can then use chown, chgrp and chmod. You *may* (but I hope not) have to modify udev rules to deal with things when it reboots. Then again, it may be a /etc/permission issue. I'd have to read over your shoulder to tell. Do you run vnc? And oh, yes, I forgot. To make my life easier I add my name and that of root to the lpadmin group. Just paranoia. Re-start cups, log out and log back in. Just paranoia. Below I am sending the complete result of "tail -200 /var/log/cups/error_log" . The single relevant line I could found was
E [10/Jan/2013:12:09:13 -0200] Returning HTTP Forbidden for CUPS-Get-Devices (no URI) from localhost
There are also lines about authentication that are relevant. I said that this was an access control issue; Authentication is the other side of that. -- Engineers aren't boring people; we just get excited over boring things. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Thanks for your help! Now the printer is running in my opensuse 12.2 64 bits. Well, I still have to configure the scanner. I will give a break for now, latter I will start that. I simply had to follow the readme file and install the printer from cups, not from yast. But my cups had some problem (access control issue?) which was not allowing me to add a printer. The Brother printer I added from yast, hence I had not to face that cups issue. It is unclear to me what was exactly the problem to add a printer in cups, but it is now solved. I did some changes in the files cupsd.conf and group (with the help of Anton), but with no success at first; then I tried to install the same printer with a different driver from xerox from yast. After that, don't ask me why, I could add a printer in cups. Thanks, Davi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Actually its clear to me from the log file and additional information Davi sent me. He was logging in as 'davi' to the CUPS server on port 631 but the files in /etc/cups were owned by root, group lp. Adding 'davi' to the lp group, logout/login so as to pick that up, making cups explicitly 'lp' and - via yast rather than manually - restarting the cusp server -- all OK now. It was, as I said, an access control problem. However, if Davi had logged in to cups as root rather than 'davi' he woudln't have seen this. Why he had the problems via Yast, I don't know, perhaps ... Davi, do you su to root to run Yast? http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/21074/dont-require-root-to-add-print... So here's a summary of what we went through, with references. Another approach is via the SystemGroup setting https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS#Alternative_CUPS_interfaces -- create a 'lpadmin' group. This is great if you want to delegate administration to a group of users rather than have root do everything. This is a good source http://etutorials.org/Linux+systems/how+linux+works/Chapter+12+Printing/12.5... It says <quote> The following parameters select the user and group that run all tasks except the cupsd server. You likely do not need to change these, but you may need to add the user and group to your system: User lp Group sys </quote> So there you have the point in case. UNLESS YOU LOG IN AS ROOT-THE-ALL-POWERFUL to user administering the lp subsystem needs to be a member of the group defined in cupsd.conf. Add the user to /etc/group's "lp" line, log in and out. Uncomment those two lines in /etc/cups/cupspd.conf AND RESTART THE CUPS SERVER (manually, ether the long way or sending it the HUP signal, or via yast). -- Few problems cannot be solved by proper application of high explosives. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Davi, do you su to root to run Yast?
I simply enter the root password in the dialog box that appears in order to start yast. I`ve never used su to run yast (never thought that this could matter). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Same only different. This way you *are* running yast as root. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Right, so running cups under yast is different from when you started cups directly and logged in - according to the log file you send me and off-list confirmation - as 'davi'. -- Those who wish to seek out the cause of miracles, and to understand the things of nature as philosophers, and not to stare at them in astonishment like fools, are soon considered heretical and impious, and proclaimed as such by those whom the mob adores as the interpreters of nature and the gods. So I ask again, how are these printers connected?
The Brother printer is connected from the USB, while the Xerox one connects to my modem through an ethernet port. I am still looking for the time to follow your suggestions. Soon I will try and post the results. Davi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

According to http://www.openprinting.org/printers/manufacturer/Xerox the printer is not supported. But the ppd file is provided by the Xerox provided rpm. Always sure you have proper access to the cups printing system by adding your user to the lp group. This will require that you logout/login for the change to take effect. The errors pointed mainly to access to cups thru localhost:631. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
