[opensuse] USB device in VirtualBox

Greetings fellow listers. I am encountering a vexing problem with the current 64-bit version of Sun's VirtualBox(2.1.4r42893) on openSUSE 11.0. I've noticed that I cannot mount USB devices in a Windows XP guest, even though everything seems to be configured correctly: USB and USBEHCI are enabled in the xVM Manager application. usbfs entry added to /etc/fstab to allow group access to USB bus. No USB filters are applied. users have been added to the vboxusers group and USB drives show up in /dev/bus/usb as belonging to that group - so the usbfs line in fstab must be working. When the Windows guest is started, mousing-over the USB icon indicates that no devices are attached, but right-clicking on the icon shows the name of the device in grayed text - so I know it knows it's there, but it will not mount in the Windows guest. opening a shell and typing: "VBoxManage list usbhost" indicates that the USB device is there, but its current state is listed as: Unavailable. Now, the problem: What can I do to make the device available, as I assume that doing so will allow it to mount in the Windows guest? aTdHvAaNnKcSe -- JAY VOLLMER -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Jay, I'm in the same boat and can't wait for somebody to help on this one... You've done more troubleshooting than I have had time for. Let's hope the answer is staring us in the face. -- David C. Hi David. After fussing with it for awhile, I decided to just fall back to the previous version (2.1.2r41885,) and everthing works. Funny, I didn't notice anything in the release notes indicating that USB had been broken ;-P Perhaps the nice people at Sun will have this working again in 2.1.5. -- JAY VOLLMER -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The above version of vbox doesn't need an fstab entry anymore it uses hal, in fact on my system x86_64 factory, apart from a problem with memory management and 2.6.29 kernel, usb system in winxp works so well that I can even use itunes to restore an ipod nano.
No USB filters are applied.

I would suggest a complete uninstall of Virtualbox and then a reinstall. I fixed a similar problem this way a while back. The above mentioned version of vbox does everything for you, although I cannot speak for os 11.0 only 11.1 and up. I shouldn't think that 11.0 would be any different to 11.1. I read nousbfilters !!! This is a positive selection of the usb devices you want use in the virtual machine. You have to select the devices you want to use.
users have been added to the vboxusers group and USB drives show up in /dev/bus/usb as belonging to that group - so the usbfs line in fstab must be working.
