I had the usual Windos crash and had to load win98 again on my windos machine. All network data was re-installed as before. Now when I click on network neighborhood, then the Linux1 icon (my linux machine), I get a box stating you must supply a password. Within the box is: Resource: \\LINUX1\IPC$ and a box for the password
No matter what I type in for a password, it states it is wrong and I do not get access to the linux machine from the windos machine. Before the crash, I did NOT get this box asking for a password. Any help in getting rid of it asking for this password would be appreciated or what I need to do to get it to accept a password.
Thanks in advance Nevada

Maybee the password encryption Win uses is the problem. There is a solution on Microsoft's homepage, I found it with "search -- samba (or similar)" some weeks ago. I have downloaded the textfile, I can send it to you. nevada wrote:

To enable plain-text passwords, add the Registry entry for EnablePlainTextPassword (as a Dword) and set the value to 1 in the following Registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System \CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Vnetsup

Just curious, why not enable encryted passwords in smb.conf in lieu of allowing the win98 box to pass passwords in the clear?

I tried that and could no longer see the Samba shares with any Win95 machines.
The last Version of '95 (Win95C) came also *with* password encryption. The registry file for that (as NT...) comes with the SAMBA docs. Juergen
