[opensuse] turning off/on compiz fusion
Hi List, I have compiz fusion installed with emerald window manager, it's all realy fancy and good, but sometimes I really feel like having the standart desktop (window manager, probably?) So my question is is it possible to turn off compiz for a while without uninstalling. Now somehow when I restart the computer compiz won't start automatically (there are no titlebars on the windows) so I have to go and run compiz fuzion icon myself, and then everything is ok. So again, the main wish is would be able to turn off compiz fusion with one or more clicks, and come to the state where I had no compiz fusion installed and no gnome-xgl-config --disable-xgl... Thanks I'm running 10.3 with KDE and all the latest stuff installed from compiz repositories. -- Sergey Mkrtchyan, PhD Student @ Department of Physics & Astronomy, Faculty of Science, University of Waterloo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What works for me: To run Compiz_Fusion I start Fusion Icon and compiz just automagically starts running and to stop it I use quit from the FusionIcon system tray icon, logout and in and it is stopped. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ken, If I just do that I'll have the windows without titlebars and frames, they're impossible to move and besides I think it's not really the same desktop I used to have without compiz (I think that stuff with enable-xgl is also slowing down computer sometimes) Sergey -- Sergey Mkrtchyan, PhD Student @ Department of Physics & Astronomy, Faculty of Science, University of Waterloo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Last year I was running beryl, a fork of compiz which allowed one-click control of the desktop - one click to turn on the beryl desktop for a demo, one click to turn it off, e.g. to run an OpenGL game which doen't play well with compositing. IOW I could easily toggle between the normal KDE desktop and the beryl cube. I'd hoped the merge of compiz and beryl would bring the cool features of beryl to compiz, but it doesn't seem to have happened. Sad to say, but it looks as though compiz is still as awkward to deal with as it ever was. Hey Joe, Actually that's one of my problems too. Let's say not playing games with OpenGL ;-) (public mailing list, you know) but for example Google Earth is impossible to run. When working I'm pretty fine with the standart desktop with couple of modifications. -- Sergey Mkrtchyan, PhD Student @ Department of Physics & Astronomy, Faculty of Science, University of Waterloo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Same here - I'm just using the kde effects (transparency etc) without compiz or beryl right now, and it's rather nice looking and usable. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hi, I you have 10.3 with Fusion Icon running, then Fusion Icon->Select Window Manager ->KWin does it for me. Hth :-) -- If you work for a living, don't kill yourself working. On Thursday 14 February 2008 06:21:38 Sergey Mkrtchyan wrote:

Hi, For me it does the same as turning off the compiz fusion icon, and restarting the computer as suggested here before, but then my windows don't have their borders and I think it still eats some resources. Thanks anyway, I guess I'm coming to the point of uninstalling it. Anyways I have already impressed everybody around :-) Sergey -- Sergey Mkrtchyan, PhD Student @ Department of Physics & Astronomy, Faculty of Science, University of Waterloo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try this (from http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz-Fusion): Disabling Compiz at startup: $ touch $HOME/.config/compiz/disable-compiz Enabling Compiz to autostart: $ rm $HOME/.config/compiz/disable-compiz Kind regards... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
There is an alternative switch to Fusion Icon: use the SessionManager: right click on the Log Out icon on the right end of the taskbar. You can switch Window Manager there as well. Maybe this works for you ? On Thursday 14 February 2008 06:21:38 Sergey Mkrtchyan wrote:
