One of the things that has always really upset me about opensuse/linux in general is when (my own fault!) the X System gets screwed, and there is no easy/documented/googable way to just uninstall/reinstall or similar, to resurrect a crook graphics system... (from the command line..) At the moment I am trying to update unconditionally from the xorg repo (yeah, probably the wrong thing, but haven't got a lot of option at this point) to try and get the system going. If this doesn't work, it will be a clean install, just to fix a broken graphics system.... sax2 won't run at all, even with -r or forcing to intel. I think I give up... This is the same issue as with zypper and the multiversion setting. You "simply" need to know the name of the tool or conf parameter. Then you're able to fix an issue. This approach is know not to work for people new to Linux. For advanced users we have to provide the opportunity to disable all kind of automatisms. But the average users needs to be guided into the direction of the solution. IIRC we had this kind of X11 configuration after a hardware change or a crash some month before. The X11 team has to have this on the agenda and might even provide a much better approach than the suggested one. The vendor has to ensure to start with a decent, conservative default X11 config in the case the display managers fails to start. Then we're able to display a message regarding the sub optimal X11 configuration and suggest to start sax or which tool ever is need to perform the fine tuning. Not always. If your Intel is 845G (and maybe others) and you've not run updates since installing 11.1, it doesn't: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=463288 -- How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver.
