printer recommendation for small lan
Hi We run a 9.1 only 20 node school lan. Can anyone recommend a cheapish b/w laser printer that will do the job for a school with 200 students? Demand can be heavy like today (300 sheets) or can drop to very little at other times. Anyone in a similar situation recommend a colour laser? Cheers, Steve

Where abouts in the world are you?
In the uk I just bought a Samsung Mono ML1510 from ebuyer.com. Cost £50
inc VAT. Really good deal I thought. I belive they have an American site
but I couldn't tell you if they sell this particular printer.
Apparently it's got good linux support.

Pretty much anything Xerox/Tektronix makes which also has a network card installed will work. I've had good luck with several here. I'm a big fan of the wax-based printers, and you can get a refurbished Phaser 850 or 8200 (or similar) for not too much money (from Xerox). Cheap's relative, IMHO. I've had truly cheap laser printers (we had a Brother HL1270N) serving similar usage that only lasted a little longer than the warranty period. It cost more to fix its output quality problem than it would to get a new printer. --Danny
The Brother HL1670N has proved quite durable, and prints duplex as well. The paper savings could justify your costs, quickly. It has been superseded by the HL5170N, which also has ethernet, USB, parallel, and linux support, prints duplex, and lists for $350 on Amazon.
