[opensuse] /media/floppy
Hello: From SUSE 9.x through openSUSE 11.2 I had this line in /etc/fstab: /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,async,shortname=winnt,iocharset=utf8 0 0 I also created /media/floppy directory manually. This worked in all suse versions mentioned above. In oS 12.1 I have the same setup, but the manually created /media/floppy directory is always removed at boot. Why is this difference, where is it documented, and how could I fix it, prevent the removing /media/floppy? Do not use /media/floppy, use /mnt/floppy. You never should have used media, and now you are forced not to. Documented in release notes, it is a ram disk. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Agreed. I got caught on this too. Don't manually create *any* folders under /media or it will break the automounter. For ages I was wondering why optical disks were no longer being auto-mounted. The error messages I got from hal weren't helpful at all. I found that I had manually created a directory under /media at some time - removing that fixed the problem. Use /mnt/ for manually created mount points and leave /media for the automounter. -- ========================================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au ========================================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Please excuse me for being stubborn but it would be very inconvenient to move floppy from /media (there are other users for whom moving an icon somewhere else causes serious trouble). As I remember correctly in suse 9.x, 10x floppy's normal location was /media. And it should be in media since it is a media along with CD, DVD and removable flashdisks.
Documented in release notes, it is a ram disk.
I think it's nonsense that I have to mount one removable media here and other there. This might be logical from the viewpoint of developers and sysadmins but sure not from that of average users. All media should go the same place independently from how they are mounted. So the question is how I can prevent remove of /media/floppy created manually. You can not, it is a ram disk. You would have to create them on every boot, and be aware that it might interfere with automatic mounting of external devices, so don't complain. The best would be to accept the changes and go to /mnt, like it or not, inconvenient or not. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. So... what did I do "wrong"? I set up mount points for several things (eg my NAS drive) in /media. Works fine in openSUSE 12.2. I don't run into any issue with needing recreate mount points, and automount for newly attached devices works fine as well.
