Ever since upgrading to SuSE 8.2 from 8.1 a few weeks ago, I have had several X server crashes a day. I upgraded three machines to 8.2, and only the one with the Nvidia card exhibits this problem, so I am making the assumption it has something to do with the Nvidia drivers. What happens is this... I'll be typing some long missive, either on a website or in a konsole session with mutt (but it has also happened while running Applix spreadsheet), and suddenly and without warning, the X server resets, and I lose whatever I was doing at the time. This is happening so often that I have taken to doing an alt-f2 and opening a text mode session to write whatever I need and then cut & paste it into whatever X app I need it in. I look at the XFree*.old log in /var/log after the X server is reset and there is no clue in there as to what the cause was. Nothing gets logged to /var/log/messages either. I have tried running the "as installed initially" rpms for X, the stock kernel, as well as the patched X stuff on the SuSE ftp servers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Nvidia drivers several times, but the problem persists. I don't believe it's a hardware problem, as the system was rock solid before upgrading to 8.2, never even ONCE having an X server crash. Has anyone else seen this or a similar problem? It's so bad and has caused me to lose so much "in process" work that I am considering downgrading the system to 8.1. I guess I'll try an earlier Nvidia driver first if I can find one. Please read my previous post today about X server crashes. It might help. Thanks, but I don't have a Riva chipset. Mine is a "GeForce3 Ti 200". I dropped back to the 4191 drivers that worked so well for me before upgrading, and also changed agp so it auto selects (and has chosen agpgart instead of the nvida agp). It is running agp 4x, but that always worked before the 8.2 upgrade with this card. Michael -- Michael Nelson San Francisco, CA

My pointer was about VIA's chipset on AGP socket [and not about Tnt2]. By the way, what was the earlier agp option that worked for you? Was it agpgart? Do you remember some way whether it was performing better than now? FPS etc? Don't just blame your card and/or chipset. I have the same problem with a ASUS P5A motherboard and a Voodoo 4.5 ( old tech. stuff ) which worked correctly with 8.0 back>. It seems to happen when the mouse is quickly moved off of a sub screen (mozilla) to the desktop. Poof! back to the console screen It happened with fvwm2 and mozilla at least 3 to 4 times. -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org Info: http://www.knoppix.net
