Force x86-64 - XEON FSB 800Mhz
Hi, How do I force SuSE Linux to install the x86_64 packages? I 've done a local mirror of http://mirrors.uol.com.br/pub/suse/x86_64/9.2/ and installed SuSE by local network FTP on a HP ML 150 server (DUAL XEON 3.0Ghz FSB800Mhz) to avoid the message that happens when I try to install by the i386 cds I have ( something about installing 32 bit software in a 64 bit hardware). The XEON FSB 800Mhz is supposed to be 64 bits and use the x86_64 packages, doesn't it? But Why SuSE install the i586 packages instead ? Another question : does anybody know if I'll have a perfomance gain using this packages or it will not be important for a qmail server? -- Mario Junior ----------------- ISP Network Admin
Only the DVD has the 64bit version. Brad Dameron SeaTab Software www.seatab.com On Fri, 2005-04-01 at 13:12, Mario Jr wrote:

You don't need to, it will detect your hardware.

It is not compatible with x86_64 AFAIK. It is a ia64 architecture. x86_64 is for the AMD64 line (Opteron, amd64, amd64 FX).

Wrong! Xeons are the server versions of the Pentium4. What you thinking of are the Itaniums.
x86_64 is for the AMD64 line (Opteron, amd64, amd64 FX).
And for Intel processors with EM64T, Intels mostly compatible version of the AMD64 architecture. Philipp

That's why as said AFAIK. Thanks for increasing what I know. Been an AMD man for decades and don't pay enough attention to Intel's goings on. The learning I get from this list, even from my mistakes, are why I have stayed around on this list all these years, so thanks for the corrections. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

I don't think so. The XEON FSB 800Mhz is the new em64t architecture not the ia64. The em64t architecture is supposed to be compatible with amd64 line. http://www.intel.com/products/processor/xeon/index.htm?iid=ibe_xeon+procspecs_xeon&

Performance gain over what?
I mean using 64 bit software over 32 bit software. -- Mario Junior ----------------- ISP Network Admin

The new Xeon processors are not ia64, that's the Itanium. The Xeons are "knock offs" of the AMD64 through some sort of agreement and are usually referred to as Xeon EM64T processors. They aren't carbon copy clones though, but they should use the x86_64 install. That being said, are these the EM64T variety of Xeon? The HP site specs them as just Xeons. Note: non 64-bit Xeons are still available. If they aren't the EM64T then SuSE is doing the right thing by installing the i586 packages. John

John, if you see my post i wrote that "SuSE 9.2 - CD Install" complains that I'm going to use 32-bit software in a 64-bit machine so i am sure IT IS EM64T. Just two more reasons : 1) Intel site says that all XEON FSB 800Mhz are EM64T. 2) I've installed SLES9 x86_64 and it worked but i hated it. It has the same broken 2.6.x kernel that doesn't recognize my adaptec smartraid V controller (dpt_i2o). So why the hell "SuSE 9.2 - FTP install" doesn't install the x86_64 packages? I definitely think that SUSE x86_64 FTP INSTALL IS BROKEN. It must be a bug, what should I do?

I installed 9.2 using the ftp (rather a http install) version for x86_64 onto my AMD64 box, so I know that it does work. And since the EM64T is basically a clone of the AMD64, it should work for you. Have you tried to download the boot iso file again and reburn it? This is the iso file I used: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/suse/x86_64/9.2/boot/boot.iso Also, maybe the mirror you tried to install from was corrupt. Try a different mirror. I've installed from ftp.gwdg.de and mirror.mcs.anl.gov and never had any problems. I have had problems with a mirror in California (couldn't connect). John

Gotcha! this morning i've installed it using the Suse-9.2-PATCHCD.iso in ftp.suse.com/people and it let you choose the arch you want, very nice.
