[opensuse] Java 64bit browser plugin
Hi listmates! This year is a good year I would say: First, Adobe heard our prayers and offered us a 64bit plugin for Flash. And now: Sun offers us FINALLY also a 64bit plugin of Java! That's just crazy insane great news for the end of this year. https://jdk6.dev.java.net/6uNea.html To very bad they were way to late again to have it in our just upcoming 11.1 release... pity. Correct, nevertheless it's absolutely this kind of news that has to be mentioned. It shows that the companies no longer just ignore us. And what does 'beta' in really mean? It's a tag put on Software to state that you offer less support on it, isn't it? For some commercial software, we're not allowed to distribute Betas. I'm not sure about Sun Java, I just want to point out that it might be an issue. If it's a final version, we could release it as online update - but I'm not sure we want to release a Beta even if the legal side is ok, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Director Platform / openSUSE, aj@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Ah, well, I did not post it as a request to put it for distribution yet... my intention was more of 'informativ' purpose that it finally exists. Sorry if I caused confusion with this. for the point when it's coming out of Early Stage, it would be very good if we can get an online update of it of course.. as it will eliminate another big issue on 64bit installs (downgrading browsers to 32bit, then fighting with all other plugins, and most probably end up going for a pure 32bit system if they need java up to now). I guess they've realized that since new computers tend to be 64 bit these days, they should follow. Hopefully the rest of the plugins will follow soon. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

James, That was close to the last plugin I was missing for 64bit... the other one is a Novell Plugin (iPrint)... but as I don't really rely on it, I never cared for it. There were a lot of browser plugins that were 32 bit only, though I haven't checked recently. However, when I installed OpenSUSE 11.0, I went with 32 bit Seamonkey and Firefox, because of the lack of 64 bit plugins. I'll check again, when I install 11.1. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Dominique, the u11 will be available via online update too, so u12 is not problem :-) BTW: I have written a small HOWTO install and setup the u12 JRE in openSUSE system. I had problems with wiki yesterday, so the HOWTO is on pack.suse.cz [1] [1] http://pack.suse.cz/mvyskocil/sun_java_u12_howto/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have installed it, (10.3 x86_64 for a few more days), using your howto, but though it shows up in Addons, or about:plugins, it will not work. I can switch back via update-alternatives to ice-tea 1.7 and the test applet will work. Does it need more than the plugin installed into update-alternatives? Does jave or jre also need pointed to the u12 JRE to work? When I try the test applet, I get a popup saying it needs to update the cache every time. Any ideas? Not a big problem, more curiosity to test out the plugin, since ice-tea works (for the most part). TIA for any ideas. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, Sun claims that new Java Plugin is not compatible with Firefox 2 and 10.3 was shipped with that version. So maybe you can find the FF3 for 10.3 in Mozilla:/ OBS repo and try it again. I tested the HOWTO only on 11.1. MV -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello, I've discovered an issue with my internal and external microphone controls. The mute functions don't work and the level control specific to the external microphone don't work. The sound device is 828011I (ICH9 family) HD Audio Controller and an identifier of 76094. This is installed on a Lenovo W500 Laptop. Any thoughts how to proceed on this as I'm not sure if it's a SuSE, KDE or driver problem -- ***************** Thank You, Michael A. Linux Software for AMD64 and for 64-bit Intel x86 should work on both, so give it a try, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Director Platform / openSUSE, aj@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just to let you know, I was running 3.05, so it wasn't the Firefox version. But, I have upgraded to 11.1, and the same link made previously via update-alternatives in 10.3 now works in 11.1. So there must be something with that version and 10.3 that do not play well together. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
