I am attempting to find a Linux replacement for the video chats that I do with MSN live messenger. So far it looks like Kopete is the more advanced Linux IM. With some work I was able to get the webcam working on my SuSE 11/KDE4 setup but I have not gotten Kopete to work with the camera. I can run gideo and see the webcam picture. I close gideo but see that 3 processes are still running gconfg-2 pulseaudio gconf-helper I open Kopete but it doesn't show any camera device. Now after running Kopete, gideo doesn't work at all. I killed the three processes and gideo works again. If I kill the three processes or reboot, Kopete shows the webcam device but it still doesn't work. There is no picture. The first two fields show the camera but the "standard" field is blank. I have looked at http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page=kopete%20webcam%20support&comzone=show and I believe I have followded it. still no picture. any suggestions? Hi Damon I'll roll some kde packages with debugging enabled in my buildservice home repo so that we can get some console output from Kopete when it tries to open the webcam device. The other kopete+webcam query from 'J Beris' can also use these for troubleshooting. 1) Can you tell us the make/model of webcam? 2) Have you tried Kopete from KDE 3? regards Will -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

1) Can you tell us the make/model of webcam? Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX. It is on the list http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html
2) Have you tried Kopete from KDE 3? I just did and it partially works. If I go to the settings in the KDE3 version
Logitech 213 0x046d 0x08d7 Communicate STX the camera is listed and I see the picture. There are two things that seem a little strange 1. in the KDE4 version that doesn't work, the Video Device Configuration selection "standard" is blank while in the KDE3 version it is PAL-M 2. in both versions the devices page has only a video tab at the top. Should there be an audio tab too? With the KDE3 version I was able to establish a connection with my dad who is using Live Messenger on Windows XP. We could see each other but there was no sound for either of us. While still in KDE3 I tried Ekiga. I ran the setup wizard and all the tests worked. I could see my picture and I could even hear myself in the sound test. This is with the webcam built in mic. Argh. Taupter (upstream video device support developer) had a run-in with mxhaard (spca5xx author) about several stupid things in his drivers and basically refuses to work around its braindeadedness anymore.

I just did and it partially works. If I go to the settings in the KDE3 version the camera is listed and I see the picture. There are two things that seem a little strange
1. in the KDE4 version that doesn't work, the Video Device Configuration selection "standard" is blank while in the KDE3 version it is PAL-M
I don't think that field is actually used.
2. in both versions the devices page has only a video tab at the top. Should there be an audio tab too?
No, space is left for an audio tab but since audio support in Kopete is still not mature it's not enabled.

Right, Kopete's MSN plugin doesn't support sound yet. Regarding the 'missing picture in Kopete 4' problem I would just use KDE 3's Kopete for the time being. I'll make those debug packages then we can see what's going wrong. Perhaps Kopete or gideo are crashing the hardware. Perhaps pulseaudio or gstreamer have the video device open so Kopete can't get a picture. Regarding audio: There's not a lot I can do to help - adding audio support to MSN is a big job, so unless a motivated individual picks it up it will continue to be a TODO. a picture. Regarding audio: There's not a lot I can do to help - adding audio support to MSN is a big job, so unless a motivated individual picks it up it will continue to be a TODO. That's a real bummer. Without that I will probably not be able to use it. It wouldn't be much fun without sound. So far it looks like Skype is the only one I can find that seems to work well for video and sound in Linux and doesn't make me have to deal with port forwarding.
If the spca driver is a problem then would I be correct in thinking that I should look for a camera that is supported by some other driver such as the uvc? Damon Register -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I definitely recommend a uvc device. Here is a list of supported webcams: http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/#devices Charles

Damon Register I have a QuickCam Pro 9000 that never had sound until I went to gnome suse 11.0. Gnome's pulseaudio allows me to activate output on my sound card, but microphone on the web cam. I missed the first part of this

Not true (I am still on 10.3). This webcam is an uvc device. All you need to do is to load the snd_usb_audio module. The whole process of getting the whole webcam working is to put this line: ,---- | install uvcvideo /sbin/modprobe snd_usb_audio; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install uvcvideo `---- in /etc/modprobe.conf.local I also have a script with these lines: ,---- | #!/bin/sh | modprobe -r uvcvideo | modprobe -r snd_usb_audio `---- to reset the webcam if something goes wrong. YMMV. I have a couple of Creative Webcam Live! models here that use spca and work well enough.

Yes, but check the list at http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/ , especially if you buy used, as some early uvc cam implementations were buggy. Will
