[SLE] Athlon madness
Hi all, I am persuading a friend of mine (windows-poweruser) to migrate to linux. I am successfull in this since he sees my system every day. BUT, my attempts at installing suse were futile up to now.. We tried: Booting the suse6.2 cd, went fine until the mtrr's were used or initialised, then loads of hex and a hung system. Booting the 6.3 standard bootdisk, was replied by "Invalid boot image, please change disk" Booting the athlon image from the 6.2 update folder was unsuccessfull too. ok , i know there was a thread about this, but a search for "athlon+bootdisk" at geocrawler was unsuccessfull... Please help me, my friend is itching to see his machine perform... There is a boot/install disk in the 6.2 updates page which will take care of this. The normal SuSE kernel is compiled with support for mtrr's and Athlons do not use them. Download the image, and make a boot disk. I believe that will solve your problem. Victor On Sun, 16 Apr 2000, Robert Alexander Stragies wrote:

Slight correction here. Athlons and K6s do offer memory type range
registers, aka mtrr. The problem is, that AMD implemented them in the K6 in
their own way, while those of the Athlon are PPro/PII/PIII compatible. The kernel
in 6.2 has the order, in which it checks for processors, wrong, so it tries
the AMD way for Athlons, which will of cause fail.
The updated kernel has the checks corrected, so it will use PPro style
mtrr for Athlons.

Not for booting, because IDE support is always enabled in our kernels. But
for using DMA/UDMA, you will need the kernel for special eide chipsets.
Once again, if you have a 6.3, try booting from the cdrom, it *should* work.

i only have a 6.0, all other installs since i have done with ftp. what does a 6.4 cost in the german market and could i get a student rebate As i asked before, would a faulty disk make rawrite complain? should i try scandisk w/ surface scan on the floppy before using rawrite? thank you,

hi all, and thanks to all those who tried to help, the problem was a !!faulty!! floppy drive, burning the 6.3 iso on a cd and booting from it solved all. And I usually check things like the web and the sdb before i post, so all the things like the athlon image from 6.2 update folder had been checked before i posted, but thanks anyway for the pointers to these locos, since they may help somebody else not looking at these before posting... My friend with the athlon is now enjoying linux, but has another prob. i'll make a seperate post for this for the impatient: X eats up between 80 and 104% !! of the Ram while running. greets, Alex On Sun, 16 Apr 2000, Robert Alexander Stragies wrote:

At least booting an Athlon system from 6.3 CDROM works flawlessly, as I did
check that. It should also work with the normal 6.3 boot floppy.

It should also work with the normal 6.3 boot floppy. which one, the bootdisk image or the eide image? as i said the 6.3 bootdisk floppy wont boot, quiting with "boot failed, change disk". Could that be a sign of a faulty disk, because the disks used might have been slightly old. And, rawrite did not complain do i have to use rawrite3.exe or can i still use rawrite.exe tell me what other info you need to diagnose, and i'll repost.
thanks already,

Yes, could be. But it could also be a sign of differently aligned read/write
heads in the floppy drives. These heads get misaligned with time (allthough
only slightly) and sometimes you have floppy drives, where the heads are
both misaligned in way that floppies written on one drive can't be read on
the other.
First thing to check is if the computer, on which you wrote the floppy is
able to boot from it. If it is, I'd try a fresh floppy.
Version of rawrite shouldn't matter in these cases. But why use floppies?
The FIC board should be perfectly capable of booting directly from CD.
