Out of curiosity, any suggestions what might have corrupted my RPM database?
Don't know, it could be anything.
I'm a little concerned having read a recent thread on this list regarding undeletable files. I have some files in my user trash which I can't delete as user or root, and I wonder if the two issues are linked to a filesystem problem.
It could be.
I don't notice any error messages on boot up except for the following:
[date] linux kernel: hdc: bad special flag: 0x03 [date] linux kernel: hdc: no flushcashe support
This must be your CDROM. This is normal.
How would I safely check and repair any issue, without trashing my system or home directory?
Boot the rescue system on your SuSE CD and check the unmounted file system with the fsck util of your file system. You might have to use the force option for the util, for ext2/3 the option is -f. If problem persist after that and if you are using ext2/3, run lsattr in the directory and send me the output.
