[SLE] Strands on PSU (somewhat OT)
Hi guys, I wanted to replace molex connectors on a power supply, ripped them off, and then realised I didn't mark which black goes where (there are two). Does it matter or are they interchangeable? Yes. ;-) They should be the same. The safest way to find out, is to use an ohm meter or continuity tester to verify. If you hook them up wrong you'll let all the smoke out, when you turn the power on. If the smoke escapes, the power supply won't work. ;-) -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Confirming my theory that everything electronic is driven by smoke. If the smoke comes out, it's broken. Seriously. I have a multimeter with a "buzz" setting. If you hook it up to two points and you get a buzz, there's a path for current to flow. Thinking that if I get a buzz by hooking up both black wires, I tried and got a buzz alright, but I also gut a buzz on any combination of the four wires I tried. Testing volts or amps requires the power supply to be on and the connectors to be plugged in to something. So what I do hook the meter up to test ohms? My memory of electronics is a bit hazy... Well, the exact term or symbol depends on the meter. However, on most, you've got some way to set for voltage, current and resistance. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Yes they are the same. (Both being "Ground" or "Earth" or "zero voltage" depending on what you call it.) Both black are probably interconnected in the PSU to begin witth. Red is +5 and Yellow is +12 volts if i remember correctly. -- /Rikard ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- email : rikard.j@rikjoh.com web : http://www.rikjoh.com mob: : +46 (0)763 19 76 25 ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

Every PC power supply unit I've ever opened had all the black ground wires soldered to a commom ground pad. Feel free to arrange the BLACK wires either way.
