[opensuse] emails marked as SPAM
Why are so many postings marked as "SPAM" in the subject line? If the mailing list software (or any SPAM filter process attached to it) thinks a mail is SPAM, then this email should never reach the list. It does not make sense to distribute such emails to all list members. On the other hand, if an email is distributed to all list members the subject line should not be altered! It makes no sense that the header "X-Spam-Flag: YES" is set and the subject is changed but the email itself is not filtered. The current situation is somewhat strange... Any explanations? The Bayes database at their spamassassin server gone slighlty bad again.

They did it that way time ago, and it was worse: some of us we were left without access to the list for weeks. I prefer it this way, at least we can still write.

Some admins prefer to alter the subject line, because it can be scanned visually before downloading the email, for instance. I would prefer it removed, though. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. At the moment, it's pretty useless. The SPAM filter should be fixed to function correctly (i.e., correctly classify SPAM and remove it in order to prevent distribution) or it should be removed, at least it should not alter subject lines. This is annoying as it leads to crippled subjects like "Re: SPAM: Re: Re: [opensuse] ..."

This makes no sense. The SPAM filter makes a wrong classification of SPAM emails (at the moment), so "visual" inspection of subject lines for the word "SPAM" does not work! Furthermore, there is the header "X-Spam-Flag" - if you (as a user and list member) need to filter emails, you should use this header (the same principle holds if you filter emails from different mailing lists into different folders: use the "X-Mailinglist" header and not the "[opnsuse]" in the subject line). My opinion is simple: if emails are distributed, the subject line should not be altered; if emails are classified as SPAM, they should not be distributed in the first place! This will be fixed on Monday (2006-11-06). Best, Christoph --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know.

You don't understand. First, I know it is not working here. Supposing it were working correctly, or in general, if you are looking at the listing of emails in an imap folder, say, you are supposed to tell at a glance _before_ downloading it that an email is spam. To see the "X-Spam-Flag" you need to download it first. Also, notice that the default setting of SpammAsssassin is to modify the subject line. I don't like it, I change that setting in my system, but that's the way it is.
My opinion is simple: if emails are distributed, the subject line should not be altered; if emails are classified as SPAM, they should not be distributed in the first place!
I agree in principle; but I repeat that they did it that way not too long ago and it was worse: we could not write to the list, many of use were denied access. The filter, it seems, is company wide and not in control of the folks administering the list. Therefore, knowing that the filter is and will be broken, I prefer getting the email wrongly marked that not receiving it at all. Why don't you tell all that to the list admin, and not to me? It is useless. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
