If I get the time and energy, I'll have a look into the PPD file, which I think is basically the same for the 4000 and the 4300/4400. I've been using a 4300 for a good five years and the 4400 for a good three years +/-.
I don't know if it is a ppd issue. I'd have to load up the scanned page to somewhere, so that you could better judge what the problem is. It is really difficult to put it into words. I'll try.

To Carlos and Mike-- Original reply deleted. I set up the printer in Yast, and I am definitely communicating with the HL-2040, but when I tell it to print a test page, whether text or graphic, it starts to eject all the papers in the tray, with nothing printed on them. When I got the printer, I ran the internal test routine, and it did pass that test by printing a page of text and some graduated gray-scales. It will still do that, so it _can_ print. Lacking some input from the list here, I will try their service email, and then I will call them up, if I have to. Thanx to all for their interest in helping out here. Suggestions? --doug

No, you did not. And you are also breaking threading info.

Did you look up your printer in LinuxPrinting.org? http://www.linuxprinting.org/database.html | Brother HL-2040 | BW laser printer, max. 2400x600 dpi, works Mostly | Recommended driver: HL2060 | Generic instructions for: CUPS, LPD, LPRng, PPR, PDQ, no spooler There is more on that link, read it up. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. OK, I'm sorry to have loused up the threading. I was working from a stored file, which apparently removes the headers. (I am not on the Linux machine, since I wish to be able to print useful stuff.) I went to LinuxPrinting, as you suggested. It should not be necessary to use the HL-2060 driver, since Brother provides a Linux driver for _this_ printer. The rest of the stuff snows me. But I _will_ get it working--I'm pretty close, now. The computer is talking to the printer, at least, which is more than I had yesterday. Brother says that if you just install the RPM and plug in the USB connector, it should work. Well, it doesn't. When I find out why, I will follow up to the list. --doug

Yes, but from my cursory read it seems they say it has problems of it's own. Why don't you try that HL-2060 driver? If it works, you know then where the problem is. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Doug, I haven't followed this thread, so forgive me for that. However, I've noted something weird in setting up a printer on occassion. If the user or me as root attempted to setup the printer (most recent was an HP Laserjet 1300) by using the "Edit" fuction in Yast, it would fail every time. The "secret" is to delete that defined printer, click finish, and cose the printer window. In Yast selet "Printers" again, and this time use the "Add" fuction. Then, manually add the printer. I hope this helps! Fred

Use cups interface directly and forget yast. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFFTJQatTMYHG2NR9URAk5vAJwIG/gzPXit7pCc2niD2FS637DMRQCfRK6S VV1fbjlgrxxjBvsgmZVv0xs= =ial4 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-HL-2040 and try google.ca/linux with the model number as the search criteria. It seems a few folks have run across some fun with this model. HTH, Mike
