Anyone have the Aethera (mail app) beta working on KDE2, SuSE 7.1?

Hey, I liked the looks for theKompany.com's PIM app "Aethera" so I installed it. It wouldn't run until I installed the latest KDE2 update. Now it runs fine but all the icons (buttons) are missing. That seems rather odd, I don't know it theKompany left them out of the RPM or what. Has anyone got Aethera working with icons? Anyone have an idea what I need to do to get them TIA ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com Central Texas IT http://www.centraltexasit.com

You have to install the rpm like this...this is another case of a company that thinks Redhat=Linux..even thought SuSE does more KDE work then any other distribution. rpm -hiv --relocate /usr=/opt/kde2 This forces it into the correct directory. Redhat uses /usr/share .. not /opt. It most likely doesn't see the correct directories. * Jonathan Wilson (wilson@claborn.net) [010404 10:22]: =>Hey, => =>I liked the looks for theKompany.com's PIM app "Aethera" so I installed it. Grrrr. What do they thing the LSB is for?! RH =! LSB !

Ok I understand but this is weird, because I downloaded the RPM that was /made/for SuSE 7.1: suse7.1-aethera-0.9.1-6tkc.i386. To answer my own question: yes, that's correct, because I tried again with your relocate options and presto, it works. I think I will complain and/or send in a patch. BTW, what's the command to make a patch with diff? I'll never get around to it if I have to go read the diff man page. ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com Central Texas IT http://www.centraltexasit.com

You should send in a report. theKompany seems to be trying hard to create great Linux software, so surely they would appreciate the report. I tried Aethera recently too, and while it certainly is lacking many features at the moment - it's an impressive piece of software even now... -Tim On Wednesday 04 April 2001 02:55 pm, you wrote:

Actually, I had an email exchange a few months ago with their CEO who responded himself to a request for support. He told me that they had made RH and Mandrake RPM's but that they couldn't possibly support all distributions because of all the differences. When I informed him of how much SuSE puts toward KDE development ..his only response was that an individual would make on soon and put it in contrib which is where "non" employee packages reside. They want to make nice KDE software if your system is running RH or a knock off. *shrug* On a side note I mailed him about the email software in this thread and his reply came back sent from Eudora for Windows. *shrug* I wonder just what anyone believes anymore. * Timothy R . The argument was that Red Hat was the market leader, therefore the best to support. However, they may have a hard time explaining why they don't support the new marketplace leader, SuSE. There may be resistance at first, but eventually they will have to support SuSE , if it remains the number one distribution in the market. If SuSE can become and remain the leader without support from man of the developers, think about how well they will do with the full support of all the developers. In the future it may be worthwhile to remind them SuSE is the number one distribution in USA. joe

joe Ben and Joe: It is hard to figure. He wants to make good software, but does not support SuSE with rpm's. I and the community, had to wait a month for "his copy of SuSE 7.1 to arrive and his packaging farm to be put together", and what do we get for all the time spent waithing. SuSE rpm's that put things in RH location, and in the case of Kapital at least for me does not import QIF files made by Moneydance (even though I had given him sample files to test with) and a second bug that crashes when editing the splits created. There was mention made about the bad rpm's that placed in RH location but no desire on theKompany's part to fix. Just a lot of muttering about the problems created by the various distributions. I can't say I've tried Kapital, but I have tried Aethera, and it seems to me the reason it "lacks features" is simply because it isn't finished yet. It appears that most of the features you would want are there - you simply must wait for them to finish implementing them so that they work.
not understand Shanwn's attitude when it comes to SuSE which does more for KDE and Supports KDE more than anyother distribution. This might kill off a very promising company in the end. Sigh!!!
It is ashame. I suppose economically it makes sense since RH and Mandrake hold the majority of the U.S. and worldwide market. Although I'm curious, after the press release from SuSE about gaining the leading U.S. position (for I'm assuming the few weeks from 7.1's release to the press release), did they keep that position, or are they behind RH again? -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Well, at least they have RPM relocation instructions on their site now... I still can't figure out why RedHat put KDE in the wrong directory. :-) It would be nice once the product is finished if SuSE would create an RPM for it though - I guess we will have to wait and see for that though.
