[Dual Head] suse 7.1 matrox, nvidia configuration problems
Hello everyone, I'm a recent convert from Redhat to Suse and it looks like my timing was right, KDE2, XFree86 4, and WOW this stuff looks/runs great, much better than my Solaris box at work. I have one last hurtle to tackle and that's my video setup. I have a AGP Matrox G400 32MB card and a PCI Creative Blaster TNT 16MB card with two crapy Gateway monitors. Does anyone have a similar video card setup that they have gotten to work at dual head? I would really like to see your XF86Config file. I've been playing with sax2 a little bit and during the part where you can 'test' the configuration I get a correct nvidia display but the matrox display comes up with visual problems. I can make out that the matrox display is showing the box that allows you to adjust the display (wider, thinner, left/right, up/down ) but it's unreadable and obviously screwed up. This is a fresh install of 7.1 so I'm not sure if there are new matrox and nv drivers available, I'll check that when I get a free moment. As I'm learning about suse's way of doing things I'll will welcome any hints/suggestions I can get. I know dual head matrox cards are about $80 now but I'd like to get what I have working. Thanks John

Matrox: you want to get the latest patches for SaX2 et. al. first, then you just go ahead with SaX2, add an additional card, make screen settings for each screen and choose traditional or Xinerama. Et voilà! I'll tell you how setting upp assymetrical sreen sizes for KDE2 went once I got around to that properly. Xinerama seems like the right choice for KDE. Don't know about nvidia, though, but there was an nvidia 3D issue in the patches, and some articles in the SDB. Check the mail threads too, at least on the german list there was more than one nvidia thread lately. BR, Gudmund
A good start is to read the Xinerama HOWTO:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWTO.html
Matrox also distributes their own dirvers for the G4xx series, whice are
usually a little more recent than the XFree86 version. Also, matrox
sells an attachment to add a second port to their G400 cards, you may
want to look into that so you don't mess with two video cards.

In addition, at the SuSE ftp site where you get the updates for XFree86
4.0.3 there is a README file that you should read if you want to use
sax2, GLX/DRI, etc.
I'm including my XF86Config, nowadays I modify by hand. Use what may
apply to you.
NOTE: GLX/DRI doesn't work in xinerama mode. Antialiased fonts don't
display in my second head.
