Evening all, What is the best/recommended method for installing firefox on suse 8.2? I'm running KDE. I find no 8.2 rpm's on the suse ftp site. There is a firefox src rpm there. What I've done in the past is install the firefox script from mozilla.org, but I've only done that for a particular user. I would rather install firefox for all users on this machine. Is it best to install the suse firefox src rpm, or to install the firefox script? If the latter, which directory is recommended for all users to share the install? Many thanks, Jim Flanagan linuxjim<at>jjfiii.com

I am still happy with my old 8.2 as well. As to Firefox, I downloaded the tar ball from the Mozilla site and installed it to /opt/firefox1.0. On every user's session's desktop (in my case, wife and kids), I created a shortcut pointing to /opt/firefox1.0/firefox. Nothing more to do here, it's working just fine. Thanks Andreas, Does Java, Flash and Shockwave run, or do you have to do anything special with those? Jim Flanagan linuxjim<at>jjfiii.com

I have no problems with Java and Flash, and the kaffeineplugin is also running. For Java, you have to create a symlink pointing to the Java plugin library. To do this, cd into the firefox plugins directory, and then (as root) issue 'ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so'. Adjust the path if your Java is installed into another directory. For the other plugins it's the same as for Mozilla, just install them into the firefox/plugins directory. Hi Andreas, Thanks for the info. You are right. I had instaslled Firefox in my home dir, so other users had to install seperate plugins. By installing it in a "system" dir this get by this problem. I should be able to take it from here. Many thanks, Jim Flanagan linuxjim@jjfiii.com

FWIW, I've built a Firefox rpm for 8.2 based on SuSE's src.rpm. Let me know if you want a copy. -- Homepage http://scottj.org XFce desktop environment http://www.xfce.org Goodies for the XFce desktop http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de GPG public key ID: 811B00AB
