[opensuse] Communication with wireless printer
Hi, I have a Brother MFC-J615W. It would run and do its job flawlessly with the most different linux distros, but with the recent opensuse leap 42.2 I just couldn't use it as wireless printer and scanner. I always install the drivers from Brother's website and I also payed attention to some specific dependencies (issues on an 64 bit system with i386 drivers). The drivers would install correctly and the printer/scanner can be configured, but I cannot reach the device over w-lan. My workaround is now a lan cable (and this fine, no big deal), but I would still appreciate any hint, what a I may have missed with my considerations. Thanks, -- Tibor I use OpenSource!

Does the printer expect authorization via WPA? If so, you may need the wpa_supplicant package. Next, have you tried configuring the connection in YAST (either as a wireless device or as a printer)? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

no, it doesn't. It is an option, but one can enter all settings manually, the printer itself is connected to my w-lan, It appears in the list of connected devices on my router. It seems to be opensuse specific, since Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu and derivates showed none of my current problems. I also tried to set up the printer with YaST. The setup is actually no problem, the communication with the printer is one. Regards, -- Tibor I use OpenSource!

Weird. The computer does not directly communicate with the printer via wifi, it communicates with the router, and this one forwards do the printer. It should be irrelevant what network technology is used. Find out if cups is permanently enabled: systemctl status cups.service (from memory, watch for typos) Try ping the printer with wifi network enabled. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Weird.
Just in case, have a look at Bugzilla – Bug 1012299 intel wireless 3160 - doesnt' work with wicked, but works with network manager https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1012299 -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Thanks for the hint, but I do not use wicked. During the last days I didn't have time to try different options, using lan just works. I will try to fix this issue later. Regards, -- Tibor I use OpenSource!
