Hi, everyone!
Just wondering if anyone was successful with WINE. I can launch some programs but can do nothing with them: can't open/save files, or can't create a folder for example.
Any info or pointers are cool,
Thanks,

I've been there and done it. The idea of Wine is pretty good even better than Wabi, because you can(should be able to run) Win 32 applications. But WINE is still in the Alpha state. So don't expect to much out of it. I am sure it will be a whole lot better next year. For now, you can better get Wabi 2.2. It runs only 16 bit applications, and is pretty stable. I run it for Word and Excel, and people run an x session doing WABI. Awsome... I know that you don't wanna pay 49 dollars to run old WIN16 applications. But here is a hint, goto: <A HREF="http://www.ftpsearch.com</A">http://www.ftpsearch.com</A> Type WABI, and set the number of hits to 100, and then with a ALT-F4 search for Linux. Then you will find it. (I am not pushing piracy here, this is for pure educational needs I purchased it after a long long test trial). Goodluck Steffen Wittum wrote:

What's the performance like on Wabi? I've gotten apps to run via Wine but they aren't very fast depending. If one was running apps that run on both, which would be faster? On Thu, 13 Aug 1998, Raymond Doetjes wrote:

WABI seems to be pretty fast. I have MS-Office-Pro installed under WABI and perceive no problems. The only application I have run under both WINE and WABI on the same machine is Solitaire, and WABI is definitely faster for this. The only indication that WABI is not "native" comes with the cascading cards at the end: every so often there is a momentary hesitation in the cascade. If you need to use any Win-3.1 applications seriously, then use WABI. Some applications may not work properly (or in some case not at all), but the rest work very well. You can find a list of applications which definitely work in: <A HREF="http://www.caldera.com/products/wabi/index.html</A">http://www.caldera.com/products/wabi/index.html</A> and there is a rudimentary FAQ in <A HREF="http://www.caldera.com/support/solutions/wabi-top.html</A">http://www.caldera.com/support/solutions/wabi-top.html</A> There is supposed to be an "add-on" which allows some 32-bit apps to be run in WABI but I have no experience of this. Apart from that possibility, you are limited to Win-3.1 16-bit applications. People who need to use Win-95 applications have told methat the only really satisfactory solution is to use a separate machine dedicated to Win-95, networked to your Linux setup; using a Windows X-emulator such as VNC allows you to access the Win-apps from Linux and vice versa. Sun have stopped supporting WABI so it is not expected that its functionality will be extended. The future of "foreign apps" seems to lie in emulators such as SoftPC which simulate virtual hardware on which an alien OS can run "virtually natively". Hope this helps! Thanx Raymond and Ted for the information. I think I'll order Wabi and check it out. The information was helpful and informative! On Fri, 14 Aug 1998 Ted.Harding@nessie.mcc.ac.uk wrote:

Hi Steffen:-) I played with wine for a little bit, and found that it worked great for a couple of little games and whatnot, but as far as using it for any applications, I found it to be a pretty big headache. For one thing, depending on what application you are trying to run with it, you almost have to have a different "wine.conf" for each one. Then as far as anything that accesses files for reading/writing, I usually get the "share must be loaded" and then it aborts out. And I have yet to find any docs on how to go about loading device drivers of any kind? I suspect that if there was a way to load device drivers, more applications could be launched with it:-) Steffen Wittum wrote:
