[opensuse] kde4 logging
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Does KDE write any log files? I'd like to look after my plasma reset problem. For those, who didn't read it before. 1. Run kde4.2 2. Fill up /home 3. Delete files to create space on /home 4. Everything OK, continue the work in session 5. Restart KDE, or the whole system 6. Every plasma setings are lost. Where could I dig deeper? I created a bug report #521633. TIA. If you had a KDE compiled with debug enabled, you could use kdebugdialog to enable the debug messages. However, on my system, there are some KDE error messages in ~/.xsession-errors already.
I'd like to look after my plasma reset problem. For those, who didn't read it before. 1. Run kde4.2 2. Fill up /home 3. Delete files to create space on /home
Just to make sure, the files you deleted were not still in use. That is, "df" actually showed the space?
4. Everything OK, continue the work in session 5. Restart KDE, or the whole system 6. Every plasma setings are lost.
Where could I dig deeper? [...]
Perhaps you should try to ask your question in the opensuse-kde list? Gruß Jan -- When it gets to be your turn, they change the rules. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, Thanks for your reply. Yes, the space was really freed up. I looked deeper, and I found the problem. KDE doesn't save the whole config file. It just appends new settings to it, and change the changed lines. So if you change something than not the whole file is rewritten. Cause of it, if a write failed because there wasn't space, the whole file became corrupted. Maybe there is a command to save the whole file, but by default it doesn't do this. 1. I backed up the plasma-appletsrc file 2. Added a widget to the workspace 3. I copied back the saved config file 4. Added another widget 5. I restarted plasma 6. Only the second widget appeared. I'll subscribe to the opensuse-kde list, and ask there about it. Now as a workaround I added a one-line script to ~/.kde4/shutdown/ to backup my plasma-appletsrc at every logout.
