[opensuse] has anyone succeeded creating a USB stick image with YaST image creator?
I'm trying to build an image for a USB stick - openSUSE 11.0 - but I seem to be getting all kinds of weird and wonderful errors. Such as: wrong number of inodes for the filesystem, unable to read local repository, media exceptions etc. I'll keep trying, but just in case someone says "ah, don't bother, it doesn't really work"? /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (20.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I tried that some time back. You have to add certain kernel modules that allow to boot from usb stick and your mainboard has to support it. To make a long story short, I gave up and bought an external USB harddrive. USB harddrives provide much more space, are faster, last longer and if space is an issue, go for 2" and not 3.5". Sorry I don't can encourage much more ;-) But, you could look on the Net if someone else succeeded and offers a USB Linux for download. openSUSE members, regardless if they are employed by Novell or not have opensuse.org email addresses. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's fine, my problem is that the YaST image creator doesn't complete at all (well, not without a pile of errors).

Not a useful solution, I'm afraid. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (13.4°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Instruction for item 3 :
plugin in usb stick
check dmesg output about the device name (e.g. sdc)
umount all possibly automounted file systems
gzip -cd <download>.raw.gz | dd of=/dev/

Thanks Masim, I might try that, but I had hoped the YaST image creator would work. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (13.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
