[opensuse] Boot problem after latest TW dup

Old HP computer so possible hardware issues. I had issues during the dup to 20180628 and need to use the rescue system to repair grub. I cannot find an email I had with steps including 'bind -o' in them so if some kind soul could sent the procedure I would appreciate it. I've already repaired the filesystem but need to repair grub as well. Many thanks. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Many thanks. Boot from an install medium, escape to a console by Ctrl-Alt-F2 In the bit below replace sdX# by the /dev/sdX# entry where your root fs is located, f.e. /dev/sda2
Then do: mount /dev/sdX# /mnt mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys chroot /mnt yast -- Gertjan Lettink a.k.a. Thank you Knurpht, I was able to repair the boot files for the older kernel and boot to it. I suspect a problem with one of the memory modules but when I try to run memtest from the 20180628 DVD image the system reboots almost imediately when the test begins (4 $Gib modules). Does anyone know of issues with the memtest on the install DVD? -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Huh, bad sign. memtest86+ 5.01 crashes for me in SMP mode, but only in a later stage (test #8). In doubt give also the (proprietary, free) memtest86 7.5 a try. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have my doubts that 5.x can be of much use, if usable at all, with DDR4 RAM. With UEFI, I can only get 7.x to work. I have 7.4 working from HD/Grub: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-support/2018-06/msg00093.html -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." Hmm, why that? (Sorry, I'm not really a HW expert...) It does run (Coffeelake with DDR4) and except for that reboot in SMP mode I didn't spot obvious errors or malfunctioning...

Indeed I couldn't get the 5.01 ISO/USB images to boot with it, but delivered via GRUB or PXE-boot it does. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I douwloaded the 7.5 iso and ran it one module at a time, Since my system does not support UEFI it ran the 4.x version Newer then the version provided via the OSS repo). One memory module errored right away and even locked the machine, had to pull the plug to power down. Only time will tell if the memory module was the only culprit.
