Anders Thanks for helping me out...
smbclient -U username -L BIGSERVER
Still comes up with "ERRSRV -ERRbadpw" .... etc... Looking in log.smb I get....... " smbd/password.c:pass_check_smb(500) Couldn't find user 'richard' in smb_passwd file. smbd/reply.c:reply_sessetup_and_X(925) Rejecting user 'richard' : authentication failed smbd/error.c:error_packet (138) error packet at line 642 cmd3D115 (SMBsesssetupX) eclass3D2 ecode3D2" and further down...... "smbd/process.c:timeout_processing (856) end of file from client" in log.nmb I get a long list of messages that explain that samba is looking for the workgroup. Probably just polling as it should do. So, I'm not sure what to make of this at all. The other day I saw the same fault on samba@lists.samba.org with Win 98 clients and Samba 2.2. The sender explained that he had "rebuilt the /etc/passwd and smbpaswd files more than once." Don't know what this is about but it looks like a bug rather than me making stupid mistakes. I now find that if I use an earlier version of Samba then most things work. Just a few niggly problems with accessing shares from Win 98. I find that I can login to some of them and not others.
