[opensuse] okular @ leap423 - is is getting worse?
After my somewhat problematic upgrade of 422 to 423 (desktop test system) last week, I have now done yet another reinstall - I was optimistically hoping okular might have been able to print properly now, but it looks like it's been getting worse. okular defaults to using inches (instead of millimetres) and A5 ?? Changes to those setting are not saved. Second, I can't set the printer options - type of paper, paper source, etc. The latter used to be available under a tab "Advanced": In okular, press Ctrl-P, then "Properties", now a windows with two tabs "Page" and "Advanced" (the latter has the options I'm looking for). With leap423, I don't get any "Advanced" tab, instead I get "Job Options". (which has very few options). The printing problem (scaled down to approx A5) remains the same. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (1.4°C) http://www.cloudsuisse.com/ - your owncloud, hosted in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Same applies to Leap15 Beta. Also, on leap15, acroread has stopped working (throws some error), so will we be able to work with PDFs on Leap15? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (1.2°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Not sure if it could be related to the long-standing bug I've encountered, whereby all Qt apps cannot print on most paper sizes. However, I'm only aware until now of problems printing sizes other than A4 or Letter. One way to check would be to test printing from a couple of other apps - if it's only a problem in Qt apps and not GTK then you may be hit by the same bug. I don't have the bug references to hand but I'll look later if it seems that is indeed the issue. gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

We use either A4 or C5 (envelopes). IIRC, neither works in Okular.

Wrt printing - printing from libreoffice or from acrobat reader works fine. In case it should turn out to be related to the issue I've encountered on more than one machine, here were the bug reports: https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-58733 https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=994809 It seems that finally there is a fix, but likely only for TW at present. I'll go and check that. Generally speaking, our print server works well, has done for years. We print from a multitude of systems - openSUSE 10.3 to 13.2, even two Windows10 systems.
Can you directly (and properly) print a pdf? (i.e., lpr -Pprinter file.pdf)
Probably not on leap15, the printer names are wrong, see boo#1078553. Hi Basil actually, it is set as one of the first things set during the install (language, keyboard) :-) Locale was one of my thoughts too - I'm using en_GB.utf8, as I always have. The scaled down printing issue appeared with Leap422, I don't think it is locale related.

The printing issue might be related to the complete setup, but it is only as of Leap422 that it fails. I think he refers to this one: LC_PAPER=es_ES@euro It is also set in /etc/sysconfig/language: /etc/sysconfig/language:RC_LC_PAPER="es_ES@euro" I even have an older file: /etc/sysconfig/suseconfig:# Update /etc/papersize to get page sizes for groff correct? (yes/no) /etc/sysconfig/suseconfig:# LC_PAPER, which is possibly inherited from the system wide value of LANG). But see the mention of /etc/papersize - when did it disappear, with Leap or earlier? 11.4 had it, but not 13.1, I think. Anyway, those settings would affect all programs.

OTOH, there were clearly things missing from the dialogue too, so maybe something got screwed up. I'll have to open report on the print dialogue.
Noticed that indeed I also see inches. export LC_MEASUREMENT=de_DE.UTF-8 fixes it for me :) And about the advanced settings: They are indeed back in TW, I can select (and change) settings like stapling etc. for our department printer. Following the comments in the boo/qt threads you linked there are backports of this for 5.10, 5.9 and even 5.6.2. Not sure what 42.3 uses? I believe that's referring to the version of Qt, not of Plasma. Leap 42.3 does indeed come with Qt 5.6.2. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Try creating file {HOME}/.i18n Like: LC_MEASUREMENT="es_ES@euro" -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" (Minas Tirith))

Where can one discover what a particular setting means? I.e. where can I see what LC_MEASUREMENT is/means for de_DE.UTF-8 or en_GB.UTF-8 ? We've been using en_GB for years, since 2004/5, never had this issue before. Besides, hasn't Britain gone metric?
And about the advanced settings: They are indeed back in TW, I can select (and change) settings like stapling etc. for our department printer.
That is good news! not being able to pick the paper tray and set the type of paper would have been an immediate show-stopper. Let's hope we get the advanced setting back into leap15 too. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (0.5°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks Dave, I have just seen the same. Maybe Okular has just recently picked up on the locale settings for measurements. :-) The problem with en_ZA and en_AU is they use a 12 hour clock. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (1.9°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The 12 hour clock irritated the hell out of me but you just prompted me to try another time format and en_GB gives me a 24 hour clock and doesn't change the time zone. Okay, this is funny (I think). On openSUSE 13.1 and 12.3, with en_GB, LC_MEASUREMENT says "Metric". Just to make sure - I guess a user can override these, so on openSUSE 13.1, I created a new user and logged in, the system locale remained as en_GB.utf8. Still LC_MEASUREMENT = "Metric". Surely something is or was wrong? Remarkably, the man page locale(5) says:
LC_MEASUREMENT The definition starts with the string LC_MEASUREMENT in the first column.
The following keywords are allowed:
measurement followed by number identifying the standard used for measurement. The following values are recognized:
1 Metric. 2 US customary measurements.
I could be wrong, but it seems to suggest "Imperial Units" isn't even possible? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (1.9°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Using LC_ variables lets you adjust each to separate locales. Look at my locale: cer@Telcontar:~> locale LANG=en_US.utf8 LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 LC_NUMERIC=es_ES@euro LC_TIME=en_DK.UTF-8 LC_COLLATE=POSIX LC_MONETARY=es_ES@euro LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8" LC_PAPER=es_ES@euro LC_NAME=es_ES@euro LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8" LC_TELEPHONE=es_ES@euro LC_MEASUREMENT=es_ES@euro LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8" LC_ALL= cer@Telcontar:~> I use file {HOME}/.i18n file to change a particular or all settings. In the past, KDE ignored these variables, and used instead "KDE settings". I don't know how to find out what is defined in a locale. I see this: localedef (1) - compile locale definition files so maybe we have to look at some source file somewhere. But I also see: newlocale (3) - create, modify, and free a locale object newlocale (3p) - create or modify a locale object -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Using LC_ variables lets you adjust each to separate locales. Look at my locale:
Yes, but that would only add yet another item to my "new install" todo-list. Simply using en_GB.utf8 has worked for years. It seems odd that en_GB.utf8 should have changed LC_MEASUREMENT from Metric to US. (aka Imperial). -- Per Jessen, Zürich (2.0°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I do not know if the definition has changed, I doubt it. But, maybe KDE now honours that variable and previously it didn't :-? On a new system, it is easier to "install" a file than it is to navigate dialogs. For a user, it is the file {HOME}/.i18n, but I'm not aware of a global file. You could add a copy of that file to the directory that holds the defaults for new users. As far as I know, one sets a unified global locale setting, and that's all, all variables get the same settings. And this instant, I forget which file it is; I think it is a symfile pointing to the tree of locales. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Yes, from the above it is KDE which has changed, and I guess, I can't verify easily because I do not use KDE, that it ignores the locale settings, it uses its own. But I remember it was so in the past. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

The latter used to be available under a tab "Advanced":
In okular, press Ctrl-P, then "Properties", now a windows with two tabs "Page" and "Advanced" (the latter has the options I'm looking for). With leap423, I don't get any "Advanced" tab, instead I get "Job Options". (which has very few options).
The printing problem (scaled down to approx A5) remains the same. Just wondering, Per, if you have set the Locale in System Settings

actually, it is set as one of the first things set during the install (language, keyboard) :-) Locale was one of my thoughts too - I'm using en_GB.utf8, as I always have. The scaled down printing issue appeared with Leap422, I don't think it is locale related.
Just to complete my comment: I am using 42.3 and have no problems at all in printing using Okular: A4 paper et al. The printing issue might be related to the complete setup, but it is only as of Leap422 that it fails. Which locale are you using? en_AU.utf8 ?
