[opensuse] Changing Permissions for User
Hi all, I created two different users. How is it that I am able to view and copy files using Dolphin from another user directory to my directory? I shouldn't be able to see the other user's directory. I'm using openSUSE 11.1. Cheers! The default permissions on a user's home directory are rwxr-xr-x, which means that only the owner is allowed to write to it, but everyone else (who can log in at all) can read the directory and cd to it. If you want to change this, simply do chmod 700 /home/<username> for each of the users. To make it the default for newly created users, start yast and go to security and users -> user and group management, and go to the "defaults for new users" tab, and change the value for "umask for home directory" to 077 Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wonder why they did it that way? I shouldn't be able to read another's files, unless they specifically give me permission. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

After following the steps, I am prompted for a password when logging out. Any idea how to resolve this using systemconfig? Cheers! Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Correction I am prompted for the password after selecting shutdown computer. By default openSUSE never prompted for the password. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This is configurable, in Yast. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. That's the default in OpenSUSE, including with earlier version. For some reason, they decided you should be able to look into other users directories. Everyone is given read & execute permissions to other users directories. You can change the default by changing the UMASK valuse in /etc/login.defs. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm confused. What justification is there that all users by default can read every other user's data? Tim -- 21:35:01 up 19 days, 4:42, 3 users, load average: 0.54, 0.59, 0.57 "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts" John Wooden

That's what I'd like to know too. While such a thing may be suitable if there's only one user, it shouldn't be the default in a multiuser OS such as Linux. If you want to share your area with others, that should require that you specifically do that. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
