Are you trying to erase jobs owned by 'root' as {user}? Try as root. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

Yes I always do that as root, and got the jobs erased using lprm, but the printer is still not accessible: lpq DJ895 is not ready no entries I have just tested the DJ895 with my Windows computer in the same network, and it is printing ok. As told I use a HP JetDircet 500x. Then my conclution is, that it has something with the setup on my linuxbox. What say ? -- Venlig hilsen - Best regards - Erik Jakobsen SuSE Linux 10.0 Eval.. How can I erase the 2 jobs ?.
First make sure that root is part of the print system using lppasswd -a root (supply a password) and then use the cancel command: cancel 167, cancel 168. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Hi Ken. I got the 2 jobs cancelled by lprm, but the HP DJ895 is still not active: lpq DJ895 is not ready no entries I wonder why, cause I haven't touched anything in the printersetup. -- Venlig hilsen - Best regards - Erik Jakobsen SuSE Linux 10.0 Eval.. Enable is a BASH built-in: % help enable enable: enable [-pnds] [-a] [-f filename] [name ...] Enable and disable builtin shell commands. This allows you to use a disk command which has the same name as a shell builtin without specifying a full pathname. If -n is used, the NAMEs become disabled; otherwise NAMEs are enabled. For example, to use the `test' found in $PATH instead of the shell builtin version, type `enable -n test'. On systems supporting dynamic loading, the -f option may be used to load new builtins from the shared object FILENAME. The -d option will delete a builtin previously loaded with -f. If no non-option names are given, or the -p option is supplied, a list of builtins is printed. The -a option means to print every builtin with an indication of whether or not it is enabled. The -s option restricts the output to the POSIX.2 `special' builtins. The -n option displays a list of all disabled builtins. If you want to run /usr/bin/enable, type the full name.

-bash: enable: DJ895: not a shell builtin
Then your next step would/should be to find why 'enable' did not work. First hint was 'not a shell builtin'. Next step 'man enable' humm seems enable *is* a shell builtin guess then that 'DJ895' is not a builtin then 'enable DJ895' won't work. BUT, 'locate enable | grep bin' yealds: /usr/bin/enable solution: to execute /usr/bin/enable instead of the shell builtin the full path is required, ie: /usr/bin/enable DJ895 -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

It is NOT a conflict, but a fact and has been for a looong time. It is no different that case sensitivity in *nix. Is that also a 'conflict'? -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

I do so little in DOS & Windows that I created a batch file ls.bat to get around forgetting. BTW I think we have a similar alias called dir. -- ___ _ _ _ ____ _ _ _ | | | | [__ | | | |___ |_|_| ___] | \/

I don't guess I understand your point. The reference to ls and dir was only to show case sensitivity, not that the commands were similar. The statement about a "similar alias" is also not understood. SUSE does provide a default alias of 'ls -l' to dir, but you may alias nearly anything, including multiple commands. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

After a little more insight it won't be solved anytime soon. enable is a bash shell builtin command and conflicts with the /usr/bin/enable command. The easiest way round the problem is to use alias e.g. alias enable_DJ='/usr/bin/enable DJ895' Then all you need to do is run enable_DJ whenever you need to enable this printer. The command can be set in either ~/.bashrc or ~/.alias if the ~/.bashrc is configured to read ~/.alias file. See man alias for more details. -- Regards, Graham Smith

Then, why not use the real name of '/usr/bin/enable' instead? It is a symlink to something else, you know... that's not it's real name.
