Hi, I purchased Suse Linux Professional 9.2 in December '04. I was unable to find a print driver for my Lexmark Optra S 1625 at the time so I rarely used the OS which shares the same box with 2 other operating systems (FreeBSD 5.4 and Windows XP Professional). The printer is currently attached to a second FreeBSD 5.4 machine and I've been lucky enough to configure everything to print successfully...except for Suse. I'm considering an upgrade to 10.0 but only if I get lucky with a print driver. This is my first posting to this mailing list and I would just like some suggestions as where I might find some help resolving my driver issue (i.e., archives, websites, etc.). thnx, Bob Perry

Peter, I visited the website but didn't see support for the Lexmark printer. I did however, e-mail TurboPrint to confirm. Thank you, Bob Perry

I did not see your specific model listed, but the first link says that since the optra line supports pcl and postscript, that virtually all of them work. Good luck! Peter

I'd like to thank everyone for their timely responses. I've had a chance to look at many of the sites suggested and I'm sure they will help resolve my driver issue. I'm no expert at this so I plan to start at the beginning by re-reading the manual instructions re general setup, then move on to PostScript printer setup, etc. Also want to share with you the response I received from TurboPrint. This may be helpful to others as well: "The Lexmark Optra S1625 is not directly supported by "TurboPrint, but should work with the TurboPrint HP LaserJet 5 driver." Thanks again, Bob Perry

Then it should also work with the cups LaserJet5 driver. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Still do not see a driver (PPD) for that model. Does the driver disk/CD have a PPD file, if it does you may be able to use it with cups. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Not the correct solution but I remember I had a similar problem with a canon printer many years ago. I managed to get it to work with linux after noticing in the manual that the canon printer emulated an epson printer of the time. Setting the printer to that epson model solved most of the problems. Is there any mention in the printer manual to that effect. There may be a reference on the net somewhere that states it emulates another model. Peter C

A technique I have used for the printers that don't have Linux drivers is to download the vendors postscript driver for Windows 2000 and use it. One printer that I have done this with is a Dell M5200, which was made by Lexmark for Dell. Any a quick search on the Lexmark download site for postscript drivers for your printer comes up with this file name: Lexmark_AldusPPD_en.exe I downloaded it and extracted the files using wine. The PPD file you want to use is called LOS1625P.PPD. You will need to install and configure the driver using CUPS. After that you should be good to go. Let us know how it goes.

Ignore my previous post.. I just installed the Lexmark Optra S 1625 driver on SuSE 9.3. This is how I did it. 1. Download MPLX2K2E.EXE from Lexmark.com. This is the Postscript Driver for NT/2000/XP/2003. 2. Use wine to extract the files. 3. Locate the file called ops1625.pp_ or the ops1625p.pp_ These are the compressed Postscript drivers. They will be in a folder called Win_2000. 4. Use a Windows 2000 or XP computer to expand the compressed driver. Open a cmd prompt and expand the driver with this command. expand ops1625.pp_ ops1625.ppd 5. Copy the expanded driver back to your SuSE box. 6. Edit the PPD file with a text editor, I used GEDIT, to fix a couple of errors. Change the following two entries: *FormatVersion: "4.2" to *FormatVersion: "4.3" *PSVersion: "(3010)" to *PSVersion: "(3011.103) 2" Add this line: *Manufacturer: "Lexmark" below the line that reads *PCFileName: "OPS1625P.PPD" 7. Use YAST to add the Lexmark Printer when you get to the part to select the driver. Add the modified driver to the database. If you did not make any mistakes the driver should be added. If you get an error check the entries. The new driver should be in the list of the Lexmark drivers to be selected. 8. After you finish installing the driver in YAST, you need to edit the configuration of the printer in CUPS to match the options installed in your printer. That should do it. Hope this Helps.

This looks a little involved but your instructions are clear. I'll need some time to review. Thanks much. Bob
