what packages are needed to get apache and php running on 8.2?
Hi, Sorry for the vague subject, I've just installed 8.2, and so far I'm impressed, its got a few niggles, but then so has all the distros, the main thing I'm finding hard is the different package names (the SuSE names don't always make sense to me at times), and configuration layout, I'm comming from a redhat background, which I have been using since 6.2, so I'm kinda still stuck in their way of doing things and certain programs are preconfigured, apache+php being one, (upgraded to rh 9, and its very slow, nfs/nis keeps crashing, alot of programs just don't work, evolution keeps bombing, glibc issues, blah!, blah!). Anyway, can anyone possably advise me on what packages I actually need to get php running on either apache 1.3 or apache 2 (1.3 is currently installed), also quickly looking at httpd.conf it seems that it is setup for php files, except that apache just displays the directory listing of the file, without actually parsing it, which would indicate that either php is broken, missing or not configured correctly :) I currently have apache 1.3 and phplib installed, which looking at the rpm description, seems to be what I would need The machine I'm running it on is a workstation, on a private segregated network, so securing apache isn't really an issue here, its only for some development work anyway and localhost usage. Hi MaC!
this is what i have installed:
michael@michael:~> rpm -qa | grep php mod_php4-core-4.3.1-24 mod_php4-4.3.1-24
same here.
michael:~ # grep PHP /etc/sysconfig/apache # enable the PHP module (yes|no) HTTPD_SEC_MOD_PHP="yes"
This I just found out after reading the Administration manual, so I figured that this is the reason why (u just confirmed it), will try when I get home. As I mentioned, its kinda strange moving from RH to SuSE, as things are a little different, but so far I'm pleased. I presume that the mysql libraries are installed with php4_core? As looking through the packages, I cannot find the required *.so libs, but then again I'm going on RH version which is php-mysql. Cheers MaC

Just a little additional info: that's what you need for apache1. For apache2 you would need a package named apache2-mod_php4. The procedure to activate the module is a bit different, there is no extra HTTPD_SEC_MOD_PHP variable, instead you would add "php4" to the list of modules in /etc/sysconfig/apache2:APACHE_MODULES="...".
michael:~ # grep PHP /etc/sysconfig/apache # enable the PHP module (yes|no) HTTPD_SEC_MOD_PHP="yes"

With apache1, SuSEconfig (SuSEconfig --module apache) needs to run after that alteration.

Yes. Peter

I was under the impression that apache + php was the way 1.3 comes on 8.2 especially since squirrelmail requires php and it can be installed. When I start up my stock (8.2) Apache, the message is: Starting httpd [ Mailman PHP4 ][Fri May 2 09:42:25 2003] Looks good to me.
