Hello, I've installed xfsft according to directions on a HOW-TO. I redid this HOW-TO and put down every single step, command line by command line in getting TrueType fonts working. It can be found in it's current rough state at http://www.firstnethou.com/gz/xfsft_HOW-TO.html But it's not working! I When I do startx I get "Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'". If I comment out the line FontPath "tcp/localhost:7100" in XF86Config then I can start X just fine. By the way, this may give a clue. I did: xfs -port 7100 -config /etc/xfs.conf then just open up another console and do ps ax|grep xfs and I get root@host-name:/usr/home/russian > ps ax |grep xfs 2820 ? S 0:00 xfs -port 7100 -config /etc/xfs.conf 2846 ? S 0:00 grep xfs which is good. So then I do /usr/X11R6/bin/fslsfonts -server localhost and I get nothing. No fonts, nothing. Does this mean that the TrueTypes are not loaded? What about the command xlsfonts It list tons of fonts. How do you tell the TrueTypes from the Type 1 ? Is there a way to list just the TrueType fonts? Any ideas? I don't have Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier in place yet. I have others like Verdana ect though. Hi George, what shall I say <guilty look>. You find my typos. It's /usr/X11R6/bin/fslsfonts -server localhost:7100 in that case. I forgot to add the port number or lost it again. ;-( I assume xfs is the link to xfsft in the /usr/X11R6/bin directory.

how does your /etc/xfs.conf look at this time? Did you add more than the TrueTypes to it? xfsft can handle these as well. (meanwhile I did this. On one occasion my font server didn't start for some reason and therefor KDM didn't start correctly and respwaned. very funny if you try to run x without fonts... <grin>) I feel "fixed" should say something to me, but doesn't. I searched my XF86Config and xfs.conf, no hint. As an other guess I'd change the port, so. reported trouble with 7100 for the X-fontserver. That involves changing the "port" parameter in /sbin/init.d/xfsft (the script that starts the fontserver) and the entry in /etc/XF86Config. Change that to port 7101. I didn't face trouble with that, though I "lost" sound played by rplayd. (not nessesarry linked)
S 0:00 grep xfs

Sorry, I have to use the dreaded word now: xlsfonts | grep microsoft (but you need a bunch of MS fonts for that like verdana, trebuchet, comic, webdings, windings, thse contain the dreaded word...) Arial and TimeNewRoman are monotype fonts. (....|grep monotype)
It list tons of fonts. How do you tell the TrueTypes from the Type 1 ? Is there a way to list just the TrueType fonts?
well, as you can guess from above, you'll need the font name to search for. In case of the above fonts it's quite obvious, in other cases I wouldn't bet. But I had to think for a monent as well...
Any ideas? I don't have Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier in place yet. I have others like Verdana ect though.

Hello, OK. I did xfs -port 7101 -config /etc/xfs.conf & ps ax|grep xfs this gives me 1534 ? S 0:00 xfs -port 7101 -config /etc/xfs.conf So then I did /usr/X11R6/bin/fslsfonts -server localhost:7101 I got nothing. Just command prompt. Shouldn't something be shown? <snip>
I assume xfs is the link to xfsft in the /usr/X11R6/bin directory.
What link? Was I supposed to set a link something to /usr/X11R6/bin/xfs ? I directly copied xfs into the directory. Same for mkfontdir . What I did is shown below: B. Install xfsft (You don't need to do 'make'.) 1. cd /usr/X11R6/bin 2. mv xfs xfs.old 3. mv mkfontdir mkfontdir.old (This sets the old files aside, just in case) 4. cp /usr/src/xfsft-1.1.6/xfs /usr/X11R6/bin (the xfs that you untarred is xfsft even though it is named xfs) 5. cp /usr/src/xfsft-1.1.6/mkfontdir /usr/X11R6/bin Did I do this right? <snip>
how does your /etc/xfs.conf look at this time?
#- /etc/xfs.conf - clone-self = on client-limit = 10 # the path to your TrueType fonts catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType # how to log errors use-syslog = off error-file = /var/log/xfsft-errors.log # in decipoints default-point-size = 120 # x, y default-resolutions = 100,100,75,75 <snip>
I feel "fixed" should say something to me, but doesn't.
I edited the line below in the file /sbin/init.d/xfsft sh -c "exec /usr/X11/bin/xfs -port 7101 -config /etc/xfs.conf /dev/null &" I edited the line in XF86Config to FontPath "tcp/localhost:7101" I rebooted. Got the same error about 'fixed font'. I tried ps ax|grep xfs and Igot 466 ? S 0:00 grep xfs My K10xfs and S29xfs files are in place and properly linked. remove the fontpath tcp/localhost from XF86Config. It always happens, never seen any other fix. the fonts are still there in X anyhow. On Sat, 4 Mar 2000, George Zeigler wrote:

Well, that won't help at all: George runs (like me) xfsft, to display TruType fonts that X won't. Therefor, you have to tell X about the font server (running on localhost, port 7100). Juergen

I include a call to "xset +fp tcp/7100" in my .xinitrc. Result is that the ttfs are available to X without the problems incurred adding the fontpath to XF86Config. On Sat, 4 Mar 2000, Juergen Braukmann wrote:
